DISTRICT NEWS. MUDGEE. (Western Post, Nov. 10.) Mr. Conrad Gardoll, jun., late proprietor of the Western Post, died at his residence, Short-street, about four o'clock on Saturday morning. The immediate cause of death was an apoplectic fit, which seized the unfortunate gentleman on Friday afternoon in Church-street. He was conveyed into the office of the Independent hard by, and every attention was bestowed upon him. Dr. Swanston was sent for and the patient revived, and apparently was out of all danger. He lay for some time in a room of the printing office, after which he pronounced himself much better, and proceeded to his residence about 6 p.m. After tea Mr. Gardoll complained of being unwell, and retired to his bed. His family were not aware that anything extraordinary had occurred to him, as there was nothing in his manner to alarm them. Towards morning he was seized with convulsions, and expired at the hour stated above. The unfortunate gentleman had accidentally received an injury to one of the arteries of the arm some three years back, by which.his health had been considerably impaired. Three months ago he was seized suddenly by an illness similar to that which carried him off, but recovered through care and nursing. He was only 30 years of age, and leaves a wife and children to mourn their loss. His death has cast a gloom over the community, and much sympathy is felt with his bereaved family in their affliction (Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser, Thursday 12 November 1885, page 5),

Mr. Gardoll is survived by a widow and four children, the daughters being Mrs. Adam Spies, of Mudgee; and Mrs. Fox and Mrs. Hammond, of Paddington. The only surviving son, Mr. Joseph Gardoll, is on the composing staff of the "Sydney Morning Herald." The late Conrad Gardoll was an unassuming man who earned wide respect, and his remains were followed to the grave by large numbers, who will sincerely mourn his loss (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Thursday 10 October 1901, page 14).
