Cafe of Ilford, NSW, to Leila ('Babe" ), youngest daughter of Mrs. James Gawthorne of Wattle Grove, Bankstown (Sydney Morning Herald, Wednesday 6 December 1916, page 10). Wedding. CAFE - GAWTHORNE A very pretty wedding was celebrated at St. Paul's, Bankstown, Sydney, on October 28, when Leila (Babe) youngest daughter of Mrs. James Gawthorne, of "Wattle Grove," Bankstown and formerly of Mudgee, was married to Percy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Cafe, of Ilford, N.S.W. The church was beautifully decorated by girl friends of the bride with pink and white flowers, and an archway of asparagus fern and flannel flowers. The Rev. W. Rutledge Newton performed the ceremony. The bride, who was given away by her mother, wore a dainty gown of white violet with flouncings of malines lace. A trail of orange blossoms held the tulle veil, and the bridal bouquet was composed of lillies of the valley, roses, and carnations. She also wore a gold bangle, the gift of the bridegroom. The bridesmaid, Miss Myree Gawthorne (sister) wore a pretty frock of pale pink taffeta, with a becoming hat of tagal straw, trimmed with pink wax flowers, and carried a bouquet of pink carnations and roses, which with a gold brooch, set with aqua-marines and pearls, were gifts from the bridegroom . Mr. James Gawthorne, ber of the bride, was best man, and Mr. John Cafe, ber of the bridegroom, groomsman. After the wedding breakfast, which was held at "Wattle Grove," the happy couple left for the South Coast, where the honeymoon was spent. The bride's travelling dress was of pink cloth, trimmed, with black velvet, with hat to match. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 30 November 1916, p. 11. Wedding Cafe and Gawthorne |

Death of a sister | Mary Jane Besant 31 May 1938 (aged 82 years) Mrs. Mary Jane Oldfield The death of Mrs. Mary Jane Oldfield, which sad event occurred at her home in Inglis street on Tuesday evening last, came as a great shock to relatives and friends. Although she had been slightly indisposed for a short period, no serious results were an-ticipated, but the fates willed otherwise, and the end came as stated. Deceased, who was 70 years of age, was a kindly, generous soul, and delighted in the performance of good deeds. For a great many years she resided in the Stony Pinch district, where her late husband (Mr. J. C. Oldfield) was held in the very highest esteem by all classes of the community. She reared a family of seven sons and daughters, who reflected the highest possible credit on her and they are among the most worthy residents of our district. To these and other sorrowing ones the "Guardian" extends its deepest sympathy. The funeral took place to the Church of England portion of the Cudgegong cemetery this morning, the remains being laid to rest beside those of her late husband. The Rev. Canon Walker conducted an impressive service at the church and at the graveside. The arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. J. C. Swords and Son. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 2 June 1938, p. 3.
