Note: PORTLAND NEWS

PORTLAND NEWS DEATHS OF FORMER RESIDENTS MR. ERNEST LOWE The death which occurred recently at Picton of Mr. Ernest Lowe marked the passing of a former well-known resident of Portland. For many years he resided in Grassy Gully, where many enjoyed the hospitality of his good wife and himself, especially picnic parties and Sunday school children. He was for some years the junior steward of the Portland Methodist Circuit, and a member of the Trustees' Committee. He was in the employ of the C.P.C. Co. for a long period in the big quarry, he and the late "Nipper" Seymour cooperating as very efficient powder-monkeys and responsible for the firing of many big shots. Leaving that, the family carried on a bakery business at Cullen, and then afterwards moved to Picton, to successfully operate another and larger bakery there. Those left to mourn their loss are Mrs. Lowe, sons Leslie, Bruce and Robert (all of Picton), daughters Valerie (Mrs. Dick Stait, Portland), and Joyce (wife of Rev. R. Boorman, of Nimbin), bers Herb and Arthur (of Portland) and Lea (Sydney), sisters May (Mrs. Southcott, Sen., Portland), and Gertrude (Mrs. R. Nattrass, also of Portland). The late Mr. Lowe was 67. He had been in indifferent health for several years, but the final cause of death was a seizure, from which he did not rally. His remains were interred in the Methodist section of Picton Cemetery.
