Note: DEATH

DEATH Mr. J. Marks By the death of Mr. James Marks, which occurred in a private hospital at Randwick on Thursday evening last, Mudgee has lost one of its oldest and most honorable citizens. He had reached the advanced age of 86 years. Deceased was one of Burrundulla's pioneer farmers. For very many years he carried on operations in that favored locality, and was noted for his remarkable industry. Farming in those days was not as easy as it is today, and the early settler had much to contend with. Like others members of the family, however, James Marks was undaunted by difficulties, and carried on for a lengthy period. In later years he came to Mudgee to reside and, almost up to the time of his departure for Sydney (some 12 months ago), he was busily occupied as a gardener. His industry was amazing for in addition to his activities in all parts of the town, he carried out quite a lot of special work at the cemetery, riding a bicycle to and from the scene of operations without apparent effort. He was one of the oldest and most honored members of the Methodist congregation, and saw many Ministers come and go. Although he did not actively associate himself with many public movements, took a keen and intelligent interest in matters affecting the progress of the town and district, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Altogether, the late James Marks was a fine old character, and his passing will be generally deplored. He is survived by the following sons and daughters, to whom sincere sympathy is extended: Robert (Lithgow), Baden (Sydney), Mrs. Potter (Sydney) and Mrs. T. Halpin (Molong), Mrs. W. F. Dunn, wife of Mudgee's respected Parliamentary representative, is a step-daughter. The remains were brought to Mudgee on Saturday and, after an impressive service in the Methodist Church, the funeral took place in the afternoon, many old friends attending to pay their last sad tribute of respect to the memory of a worthy citizen. The Rev. A. C. Towner officiated at both services. Members of the Foresters' Lodge, of which deceased was a very old member, marched at the head of the procession. The arrangements were carried out by Messrs. J. C. Swords and Son. Mudgee Guardian, Monday 29 April 1946, p. 8. Obituary James Marks
