Note: FATAL COLLAPSE WHILE ADJUSTING GAS SERVICE

FATAL COLLAPSE WHILE ADJUSTING GAS SERVICE Overcome by fumes when clearing water from a gas-pipe at his sister-in-law's home, a retired miner, Walter David Murkins, 63, of 34 Brown-street, was found dead yesterday with his head lying in a hole dug to uncover the pipe. Police who investigated said there were no suspicious circumstances and expressed the opinion that Murkins had been asphyxiated by the strong flow of gas. About 9.30 a.m. yesterday Mr. Murkins went to the home of his sister-in-law; Mrs. Amy Baker, of 42 Brown-street to release water which had interfered with the flow of gas in the mains. Found At Side Of House. - After speaking to Mrs. Baker he went to the side of the house and dug a hole about two feet deep to uncover the pipe. He removed the socket end and allowed the water to flow from the pipe, which had accumulated in the mail. When the water had flowed out, deceased apparently attempted to screw the socket back into position, but apparently it became cross-threaded and the gas proved too strong for Murkins. A short time later, Mrs. Baker went to the side of the house and saw Murkins lying with his head in the hole from which gas was still escaping. She pulled him clear and sent for the doctor, but Murkins was dead when the doctor arrived. Possible Asphyxiation. - Sgt. A. E. Sheldrick and Det. W. J. Heron went to the scene and, after examining the body, Shared the doctor's opinion that death had been due to asphyxiation. A Lithgow City Council employee was called later and readjusted the gas pipe to prevent further fumes escaping. The coroner viewed the body and an inquest will be held at a date to be fixed. This morning the Town Clerk, Mr. H. Baker, was advised of the incident and asked that certain enquiries be made. Deceased was born at Mudgee and came to Lithgow with his family 51 years ago. He worked at the Slate Mine for 28 years and retired three years ago, Mr. Murkins is survived by his wife Mrs. Albenia, Murkins, one daughter Phyliss (Mrs. R. Bryant, Sydney) , two sisters, Agnes (Mrs. Bert Allen) and Thelma (Mrs. G. Morris) three bers, Thomas, Oliver and Val (all of Lithgow) and two grandchildren, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. The funeral was set down for this afternoon, Joseph Mills, Lithgow City Funerals, being in charge of arrangements. Lithgow Mercury, Monday 5 May 1952, p. 2. Died fixing Gas Walter David Murkins

DEATH Mr. T. R. Murkins One of Lithgow’s most highly-respected and best-known residents, Mr. Thomas Richard Murkins, of 16 Sutcliffe Street, passed away suddenly at his home on Saturday morning. Mr. Murkins, who had been in failing health for some years, suffered a miner’s disability but his death was unexpected and came as a shock to his family and friends. Born in Mudgee, Mr. Murkins came to Lithgow as a child and he had lived in the Morts Estate for many years. He enjoyed a wide circle of friends, not only in Morts Estate, but in Lithgow as a whole and his passing will be mourned by all who knew him. Mr. Murkins had been employed at the State Mine for many years, but ill health forced his early retirement. A staunch worker for St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, he was a foundation member of the Holy Name Society in Lithgow. He is survived by his wife, Mary, to whom sympathy will be extended. He is also survived by two bers, Oliver and Val and two sisters, Mesdames Allen and Morris, all of Lithgow.
