Note: Lawson's Creek Tragedy

Lawson's Creek Tragedy YOUNG MAN DROWNED. On Tuesday night, around 8 p.m., Ernest George Fittler went swimming in Lawsons Creek, Oakfield, with two companions, J. Whitley and Mervyn Kurts. It is surmised that he was seized with cramps in a depth of five or six feet of water, and was immediately in difficulties. His companions noticing his plight, went to his assistance, and Whitley thought he had succeeded in placing him out of danger. Fittler slipped back, however, and pulled Whitley under. Kurtz then made an attempt to rescue the unfortunate man, but he disappeared. Assistance was called, and Mr. M. J. Morgan arrived on the scene and dived and recovered the body. Immediate efforts were made to restore respiration without avail. Dr. Challands, who had been summoned by telephone, pronounced life extinct on his arrival. Deceased was a son of Mr. Fred Fittler, of Spring Flat, and was in the employ of Mr. A. I. Cox, Oakfield. He was a single man, 22 years of age, and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. An inquest was held at Oakfield by the Deputy Coroner, Mr. W. J. Nelthorpe, who, after hearing evidence, found that deceased met his death by accidental drowning. At the inquest Mr. A. I. Cox spoke highly of deceased as an employee and paid a tribute to his qualities. A sad feature of the tragedy was that deceased's father and mother only returned from a holiday at Dunedoo on Tuesday night. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved family. The funeral took place on Wednesday., the Rev. E. J. Flanagan officiating. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 8 February 1923, p. 9. Obituary Ernest George Fittler
