Death of a father | George Edward Oldfield 4 August 1924 (aged 15 years) The Late Mr G. Oldfield A FINE OLD PIONEER. George Edward Oldfield died on August 4. In the good old days, when Cobb and Co. ran coaches in many districts in the west, George's father was a driver from Nyngan to Bourke. At the age of 15 George took up the reins and drove his four in hand for about eight years. He married Miss Lynch, the daughter of a well-known Nyngan auctioneer, and resided at Gilgandra. From that township he went to Mebul, Yamble, and Gulgong. For 27 years he and his wife resided near Gulgong, rearing a family of three sons and seven daughters. About a year ago Mr. Oldfield became unwell and, although he consulted specialists in Sydney nothing could be done. He was laid to rest in the Church of England portion of the Gulgong Cemetery on Monday, the Rev. C. J. Allen officiating at the graveside. The Digger Prince Mine was closed on that day as a tribute of respect. - Gulgong ''Advertiser." Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 21 August 1924, p. 5. Obituary George Edward Oldfield |

Death of a sister | Helen Fredrica Oldfield 20 June 1953 (aged 44 years) PERSONALITIES Mrs. J. A. Hughes, of Thornton Street, received the sad news early on Saturday morning that her sister, Mrs. Helen Apthorpe, wife of Mr. Bill Apthorpe, of Maxwell Street, had passed away suddenly at Hamilton at 1 a.m., following a seizure the previous day. Mr. and Mrs. Apthorpe motored to Newcastle last Monday to spend a few days with Mrs. Apthorpe's sisters, who reside in and around Newcastle. Mrs. Hughes, who only returned during the week from Sydney, where she had visited her husband, who is in Concord Military Hospital, was motored to Newcastle by her son on Saturday to attend the funeral, which took place this afternoon. The late Mrs. Apthorpe, who was on the Western Stores staff (men's department) until her husband was discharged from the Army, was well known in Wellington and had endeared herself to the many people with whom she came in contact. As a Judge of needlework, deceased was in demand by show societies and she was Chief Steward in the needle-work section at Wellington Shows. Although she had not been in the best of health for sometime the news of her sudden death came as a severe shock to her relatives and friends and has caused widespread regret.
