Death of a brother | Thomas Jeremiah Houlahan 15 July 1919 (aged 50 years) Very Ill. We regret to report that amongst the influenza victims is Mr. Thomas Houlahan, the popular licensee of the Federal Hotel, whose condition is so critical that but little hopes are held out of his recovery. Mudgee Guardian, Monday 14 July 1919, p. 2. Very Ill Thomas Houlahan Deaths. MR. THOMAS JEREMIAH HOULAHAN. The death occurred at 1.30 p.m. on Tuesday morning last of Mr. Thomas Jeremiah Houlahan, son of Mrs. James Fitzgerald, of Sydney, aged 23, the cause of death being pneumonia. The deceased had only been ailing for a short period. He was a very highly respected and esteemed resident of Mudgee, and the sad news of his death caused universal regret. For the past three months Mr. Houlahan conducted the Federal Hotel, Mudgee, previous to which he was the proprietor of the Hotel Metropole, Lismore. He was a fine sample of manhood. He is survived by his widow, and the following bers and sisters: Messrs. Gerald, James, Alfred, and Timothy Fitzgerald, and Mrs. Patterson (Sydney) and Mrs. Paton (Lismore). There were no children of the marriage. The family have had a great deal of trouble of late. Only a week ago Mr. John Ashton, uncle of the deceased, died, and now Mr. Gerald Fiztgerald and other members of the family are ill with influenza. The body was taken to Uarbry on Tuesday last, and the remains were placed in the Roman Catholic portion of the cemetery, the Rev. Father O'Reilly, of Gulgong, officiating at the graveside. Mr. H. Barton had charge of the funeral arrangements. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 17 July 1919, p. 16. Death Thomas Jeremiah Houlahan Local Brevities Mr. Houlahan, who died in Mudgee on Monday night, was to all appearance a strong, robust man, and the very last whom it would be thought was likely to go under to the influenza with its dreaded attendant of pneumonia. Hut though he put up a good fight the thing was too much for him. Mr. Houlahan, who himself had been for a few months at the Federal Hotel, was a ber of Mr. Gerald Fitzgerald, of the Oriental Hotel, Mudgee. He was born in the Cassilis district, where at the time of his death he had valuable, property interests. There are numerous bers and other relatives of Mr. Houlahan, residing in the Cassilis district, where the gentleman himself is well known and very highly respected. Mr. Houlahan came to Mudgee to assume the proprietorship of the Federal Hotel, from Lismore, then Queen City of the Northern Rivers. He had always a big liking for Mudgee, an ambition to settle down in the town. This ambition he grasped as his but unhappily, he did not live long to enjoy what he had attained. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 17 July 1919, p. 10. Obituary Thomas Houlahan |
Death of a mother | Mary Marice Ashton 6 October 1934 (aged 65 years) DEATHS Mrs. Mary Fitzgerald THE death occurred at her residence at Leichhardt on Friday of Mrs. Mary Fitzgerald, formerly a very well known resident of Uarbry, at the age of 88. The late Mrs. Fitzgerald, who was the widow of Mr. James Fitzgerald, was born at Blackheath, but had resided at Uarbry for the greater part of her life. She left the Mudgee district for the city some years ago. She visited this town a few months ago, when she stayed with her son Gerald, of Mortimer street. Four sons and one daughter survive. The funeral took place to the Roman Catholic cemetery at Uarbry yesterday afternoon, the remains having been brought to Mudgee by Saturday's train. The funeral was preceded by a service, conducted by Monsignor Flanagan, at the Mudgee Roman Catholic Church. Rev. Father Curran, of Dunedoo, conducted the rites at the graveside. Funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs J. C. Swords and Son. Mudgee Guardian, Monday 8 October 1934, p. 4. Obituary Mary Fitzgerald DEATH THE death of Mrs. Mary Fitzgerald took place in Sydney on 6th instant. She was buried in the R.C. portion of Uarbry cemetery. She was an old identity of Uarbry, where she reared a family of five sons and two daughters. (Further particulars are published under Cassilis news.- Ed., G.). Mudgee Guardian, Monday 15 October 1934, p. 2. Death Mary Fitzgerald DEATH OF AN OLD IDENTITY ON Sunday, 7th inst., near the scenes of her early childhood days, the remains of an old identity, in the person of Mrs. Mary Fitzgerald, were laid to rest, having been brought from Sydney, where she passed away. The late Mrs. Fitzgerald was born at Blackheath 89 years ago, and she removed at an early age to Uarbry, where her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ashton, kept a hotel. After such a long span it is unique that she should have been laid to rest in the Uarbry cemetery, only a short distance from the site of the old hotel. Her husband, the late Jas. Fitzgerald, predeceased her by 28 years. For many years she and her husband lived in the Cassilis district, where they reared a large family, all of whom are well known and highly respected in the district. Those living are Cr T. Houlahan (Curryall), Gerald and James Fitzgerald (Mudgee), Alfred (Duncdoo) and Mrs. Paton (Leichhardt). The large gathering at her graveside from all parts of the district bore striking testimony to the respect and esteem with which she was regarded. We extend to the bereaved family our deepest sympathy in their great loss. Mrs. H. McMahon, of Cassilis, is the only remaining sister. Mudgee Guardian, Monday 15 October 1934, p. 6.
