UNEXPECTED DEATH Late Mrs. Alice Leighton The death occurred suddenly at her home, 8 Padley-street, yesterday afternoon of Mrs. Alice Jane Leighton, at the age of 69. The late Mrs. Leighton had been suffering from a cold and bronchitis for several weeks, but did not regard the illness seriously enough to go to bed. She collapsed yesterday after noon, and before aid could be summoned passed away. Mrs. Leighton had lived in Lithgow for 30 years, and was widely known and very popular. She was an ardent supporter of the Presbyterian Church. She was a native of Rylstone. The deceased is survived by her husband, Mr. James Leighton, 8 Padley-street, three sons and two daughters. Members of the family, are: Messrs. Roy and James Leighton (Lithgow) and William Leighton (Melbourne), Mrs. O. Pye (8 Padley-street) and Mrs. I. McCabe (Lane Cove). Her ber is Mr. Alfred Haines (Dubbo), and her sisters Mesdames Bailey (Gilgandra), Bird (Dubbo), Buckley (Newcastle), and Upton (Sydney). The funeral has been arranged for tomorrow afternoon, the cortege to leave the Hoskins Memorial Church at 3.30 for the Bowenfels cemetery, Mr. E. McMurtrie has the burial arrangements in hand. MR. JAMES LEIGHTON Death In Hospital One of the best known identities of the district, Mr. James Leighton passed away in Lithgow hospital last night. Deceased was born at Black Springs 78 years ago and in the early part of his life followed railway construction. He came to Lithgow 28 years ago, and was employed at the steelworks until the transfer to Port Kembla. Before the introduction of a railway line from Sydney to Mudgee, the late Mr. Leighton drove a horse waggon between the two centres. He was a man of very quiet disposition, but made many friends. He leaves three sons and four daughters. His wife predeceased him 12 months ago. The sons are Messrs. Roy (Lithgow), James (Lithgow) and William (Melbourne), and daughters Mrs. Ina McCabe (Lane Cove) and Mrs. O. Pye (Gladesville). Three bers, Messrs. D. Leighton, of Sydney, W. Leighton, of Kandos, and R. Leighton, Wollongong, and two sisters, Miss E. Leighton, Sydney and Mrs. W. Davis, of Sydney, also survive. PERSONAL The funeral of the late Mr. James Leighton took place yesterday, the cortege moving from McMurtrie's funeral, parlors for the Presbyterian portion, of Bowenfels cemetery. The pall-bearers were R. W. Dean, R. Leighton (son), J. Leighton, (son) and L. Leighton (nephew). Among the wreaths were two of the permanent type from the Bren gun section of the S.A.P. and one from the Leighton family. Rev. T. Mathers officiated at the graveside.
