Note: A Real Pioneer

A Real Pioneer LATE THOMAS CHARLES KING Link With the Golden Days By the death of Mr. Thomas Charles King, which occurred at Eurunderee on Monday last, the Mudgee district has lost an outstanding character - one of the real pioneers. Born at Sutton Forest 92 years ago, he came of a family of sturdy, resourceful Australians. Educated at the Goulburn Grammar School, he acquired a sound knowledge of the things that count, which fitted him for the strenuous years ahead. Early in life he, like so many other adventurous young men, contracted the gold fever, and went aroaming. His pan was busy on the fields at Gundagai, Lambing Flat, and other golden centres, and in the early seventies he was one of the many thousands who were lured to Gulgong and Home Rule, famed throughout world for their glittering treasures. It is recalled that in the boom period over 13,000 people, the majority of whom were engaged in a feverish search for the elusive nugget, concentrated on Home Rule, and the nights and days were full of incident. Of the stirring happenings of those hectic times the late Mr. King could tell many a gripping story. Gifted with a retentive memory and a keen intellect, his reminiscences of the goldfields always commanded keen attention. During all his long life he was noted for a sturdy independence and strength of character, and his word was his bond. For those buffeted by an unkind Fate he had a kindly feeling, and many a weary, disappointed soul found in him a comforter and friend. After the heat and burden of the day he settled down at Home Rule, but some five years ago he took up residence with his daughter (Mrs. W. M. Bones) at Eurunderee, where he breathed his last. Though the flesh was weak, his indomitable spirit maintained him through the closing stages of a life which had been crowded with incident, and he passed peacefully into the shadows. May his soul rest in peace. Deceased, it might be mentioned, was a ber of the late Mrs. I. Rowbotham, one of the grand old women of Home Rule, who was honored by all with whom she came in contact. Mrs Bones, as mentioned above, is the only surviving member of his family. Mr R. J. King, of Strathfield, well known in the bowling world, and Mr H. King, of Roseville, are bers. To the sorrowing ones the deepest sym-pathy is extended. The funeral took place to the Church of England portion of the Gulgong cemetery, the Rev. L. V. Caldwell officiating at the graveside.
