Obituary LATE MRS. SHEARMAN The death occurred of Eliza, wife of Mr. Christie Shearman, of "Pinelea," Goolma, at the age of 74 years. Deceased was in good health until last Sunday night, when she became seriously ill, and she died on Tuesday at Parkes, where she was staying with her son, Roland. Her husband and members of the family were at her bedside when the end came. Deceased was born in Victoria, but lived practically all her life at Goolma. The body was taken to Wellington from where the funeral took place to the Church of England portion of the Spicer's Creek cemetery. The Rev. L. Caldwell, of Gulgong, officiated at the graveside, and Mr. Shakespeare, of Wellington, had charge of the funeral arrangements. Deceased was one of the most highly esteemed residents of the Goolma district, and her sudden death came as a distinct shock to all those who were fortunate enough to be numbered amongst her friends. Her charity was unbounded, and any appeal of deserving nature found her responsive. To the bereaved relatives the deepest sympathy is extended. The following sons and daughters survive: - Messrs. Mr. Christopher Shearman BY the death of Mr. Christopher Shearman in Mudgee this morning, the Goolma district has lost one of its most well known and highly respected men on the land. The late Mr. Shearman, who had reached the age of 82, passed away in a private hospital, of which he had been an inmate for about six weeks. Born in Ely (England), he had arrived in Australia with his parents at the age of two, and had lived in the Goolma district practically all his life. He was a most able and successful grazier and sheep-breeder and was noted as a lover of horses and as a rider. He had, in fact, been able to break-in horses up till a few years ago. Mr. Shearman was also noted as an ardent worker for charitable causes, and was a staunch supporter of the Church of England. Ten children survive Mr. Shearman, his wife having predeceased him by six years. She was a member of the well known Hughes family, which was among the pioneers of the Spicer's Creek district. The sons are Ernest (Coolah), Walter (Goolma), Roland (Bourke), Arthur (Queensland), and Stanley (Coonabarabran). Mr. Reg. Hughes (Goolma) is an adopted son. The daughters are Mesdames J. Higgins (Newtown), W. Rush (Two Mile Flat), F. Brophy (Narrandera), and Misses Elsie and Aileen (Goolma). Mrs. W. Skinner (Goolma) is a sister, and Mr. R. Shearman (Goolma) a ber. The funeral will take place tomorrow (Tuesday), and the cortege will leave the Goolma Church of England at 2.30 p.m. for the Spicer's Creek Cemetery, where the interment will be carried out. OBITUARY CHRISTOPHER SHEARMAN. The death took place in a private hospital in Mudgee early this morning of Christopher Shearman, at the advanced age of 82 years. Deceased, who leaves a grown up family, has been a resident of the Goolma district for a great many years, where the family name is well and favourably known. His wife predeceased him about 6 years ago. The remains have been brought to Mudgee and are resting in the Goolma Church of England, from where the funeral cortege will leave at 2.30 tomorrow afternoon for the Spicer's Creek cemetery. SPICER'S CREEK Death of Christopher Shearman Christopher Shearman, one of Mudgee district's oldest and most respected residents, passed peacefully away on Monday, 10th inst., at the age of 83 years. He had been an inmate of Broughton Hospital, Mudgee, for some time. He went to Mudgee at an early age with his English parents. Later in life he owned properties at Lambing Hill and Uamby. For over 40 years he successfully carried on grazing on his property, 'Pine Lea,' at Goolma. He was a skilled horseman, a good judge of stock and a man who was ever honest in his dealing with his fellowmen. His word was his bond, and he bore his last painful illness with brave, cheerful fortitude. Christopher Shearman leaves behind him a record of integrity and uprightness of character He is survived by five daughters: Mrs. J. Higgins (Sydney), Mrs. W. Rush (Two Mile Flat) , Mrs. F. Brophy (Grong Grong) and the Misses Elsie and Aileen Shearman (Goolma). The sons are: Walter (Goolma), Ernest (Coolah), Roland (Bourke), Arthur (Rockhampton) and Stanley. The funeral cortege, which was a large and representative one, passed from the Goolma Church of England to the Spicer's Creek cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife, who predeceased him by six years. UNUSUAL SUICIDE SYDNEY. - A shunter had committed suicide by setting two railway trucks in motion, then lying on the line in front of them, the City Coroner (Mr. E. J. Forrest, S.M.) found yesterday. Mr. Forrest was inquiring into the death of Kelso Vale Shearman (52), of Annandale Street, Annandale, at Rozelle goods yard on December 5. Detective-Constable N. S. Teudt said Shearman's legs were stretched out and his arms folded in a natural position. His neck rested on the rails. The grade was such that a man could start the trucks, run ahead of them, and then lie down on the line before the trucks reached him. Advocate, Thursday 7 January 1954, p. 5.
