Death of Mr. John Pateman. The tolling of the bell of St. John's Church yesterday evening announced the passing away of Mr. John Pateman, one of Mudgee's oldest towns-men. The deceased had by three years passed the allotted three score years and ten, and had been ill for some time, his condition being such as to hold out but the very faintest hope of recovery. Mr. Pateman is survived by a widow and grown up family, who will have the deep sympathy of their many friends (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Thursday 19 January 1905, page 13).

DEATH OF MRS. CHARLES FROST. Only a few weeks back we regretted to hear of the rather severe illness of Mrs. Charles Frost, at Parramatta. On Saturday the sad intelligence reached Mudgee announcing the death, which occurred at her daughter's (Mrs. T. Williams). The deceased was the second daughter of Mrs. Jas. Pateman, of Church-street, Mudgee. Universal sympathy is extended to the relatives in their sad affliction. The body was interred at Parramatta today. Mudgee Guardian, Monday 12 August 1912, p. 3. Caroline Frost Obituary

Note: A LARGE FAMILY.

A LARGE FAMILY. Mrs. Caroline Augusta Frost, mother of a number of young people known very well in social circles in Parramatta, passed away on Saturday at the age of 47 years. Mrs. Frost was a native of Mudgee, where she was married. She was the daughter of Mr. James Pateman, a business man of that old country town. An interesting fact in these days, more particularly when so much is heard as to the slow growth in number of the best immigrants' a young country can have, was the fact that Mrs. Frost was the mother of fifteen children, ten of whom are still living (four sons and six daughters). Note: Death of an Old Resident

Death of an Old Resident MRS. CAROLINE ELIZABETH PATEMAN. The death occurred at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. James Dykes, Gladstone-street, Mudgee, yesterday afternoon, of Mrs. Caroline Elizabeth Pateman, relict of the late Mr. James Pateman, aged 80 years. The deceased lady was very highly respected and esteemed, and during her long residence in the Mudgee district had made a host of friends. She had a disposition and was very charitable, and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone. The cause of death was general break-up, the deceased having been ailing for about 11 months. The late Mrs Pateman was a native of Smithfield (near Parramatta) and came to Mudgee with her husband and two young children 59 years ago, when they went to Pipe-clay and opened up a bakery business there. At this time the great gold rush was on at Pipeclay. After remaining at Pipeclay for a few years they came to Mudgee, and took up their residence at a site where Messrs. Jas. Loneragan (Mudgee) Co.'s wool and skin establishment, in Mortimer Street now stands. After remaining in these premises for some time, they removed to Market Street and opened up business at a shop where Mr. W. Sheath at present resides. After remaining in the shop for 11 years they removed to Sydney for about two years and then to Smithfield (Mrs. Pateman's native town) and opened a bakery business there and remained there for about two years after which they returned to Mudgee again and opened up a bakery business opposite Mr. W. Bowen's present fruit shop. After remaining in these premises for three years they removed to premises on the corner of Church and Mortimer streets, where Mr. A. Douglas at present conducts a business, and after carrying on business for the lengthy term of 18 years they removed to the premises where , the well-known "Pateman's Bakery" business is at present conducted, under the management of deceased's daughter, Mrs. W. Gordon. The late Mr. James Pateman pre-deceased his wife by about 13 years. The deceased leaves five daughters and three sons, namely : - Mrs. Quarter (Parramatta). Mrs. Rossiter (Wellington. N.Z.) Mrs. McDarra (Sydney), Mrs. W. Gordon (Mudgee), Mrs. Jas. Dykes (Mudgee), John (Mudgee), James (Mudgee) and Sidney (Paddington). Besides the above children the deceased leaves 37 grandchildren and a great number of great-grandchildren. The funeral took place this afternoon, the remains being interred in the Church of England portion of the general cemetery. The Rev. Canon W J. Dunstan officiated at the graveside. Mr. H. Barton had charge of the mortuary arrangements (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Thursday 24 October 1918, page 16).

Note: More Sudden deaths

More Sudden deaths MR. W. GORDON DROPS DEAD. On Saturday afternoon the nerves of Mudgee people, already shaken by quite a phenomenal sequence of sad and sudden deaths, received a severe shock when it became known that one of its most sterling citizens, in the person of Mr. W. Gordon, had suddenly dropped dead. For a time people would not credit the report, for he had been seen that same day walking the streets and appeared as hale and hearty as ever. It appears that the deceased ate a hearty dinner, as was his custom, but soon afterwards complained of a pain in the chest. He was a stout, full-blooded man, and attributed the pain to indigestion. His wife, hoping to banish the pain gave him a dose of "Pain Killer." Mr. Gordon then went out for a walk and called in to be shaved by Mr. Lon Casimir. He then visited the Post Office, and while returning home remarked that the pain in his chest was worse. On arriving at his business premises he went into his work room with the intention of doing some pressing. He looked ill, and suddenly leant forward on the "board" with the remark, 'Oh, this pain is dreadful. No one knows what I'm suffering. I am losing power in my arms." With that he staggered and fell back into the arms of his brother-in-law, Mr. James Pateman. The doctor was immediately sent for, but deceased was quite dead before the medical man arrived. The cause of death was heart failure. The late Mr. Gordon was 39 years of age, and was a native of Mudgee, being a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Gordon, who were widely known in this and surrounding districts. He passed his early life in the town, and was educated at the local public school. On leaving the care of the Education Department, he was put to learn the tailoring trade with Mr. Harry Rushby, who has now retired from business. Deceased married a sister of Mr. James Pateman, and afterwards entered into business on his own account. Deceased was a quiet but sincere man. He took a great interest in sport, and was secretary of the Mudgee Coursing Club for a considerable time. Though unassuming in manner he held strong views, and was never frightened to speak them. He was a good husband and a kind father, was always courteous, and had a knack of making and holding friends. He was an enthusiastic Forester, and was a member for 19 years. He leaves to mourn a widow and the following children: - Harold, Horace, James, Rita, Allan, and Una. The eldest child is 17 years old. Amongst those who sent floral tributes in honor of the deceased were Mr. and Mrs. R. Mills, Mr. James Hawkins, Mrs. Plows and family, Mudgee Coursing Club, Mrs. Jeremy, Mr. and Mrs. Hall and family, Mr. Theo. Boyling, Miss Harriet Coflee, Mrs. Nelthorpe. Mr. and Mrs. W. Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. Paine, Mr. Jack Knight, Mr. and Mrs. Milton, Mrs. Piper, and the Foresters' Lodge. The remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the Mudgee cemetery on Saturday, the Rev. W. J. Dunstan officiating at the graveside. The funeral cortege was a long one, and included members of the Foresters' and Oddfellows' lodges. To the sorrowing widow and family we extend our deepest sympathy. Note: Mainly About People

Mainly About People The death occurred in the Lewisham Hospital, on Friday last, of Mrs. Florence Dykes, widow of the late Mr. James Dykes, aged 75 years. Deceased, who was a member of the fine old Pateman family, spent practically the whole of her life in Mudgee, and held the love and respect of all classes of the community. Although she did not seek the high positions in public life, her help was always forthcoming when the call arose, and there was no one, perhaps, who had a wider circle of devoted friends. Her passing, therefore, brought sadness to homes all over the district, and it can be said with perfect truth that her memory will be held in deep reverence for many a long day. The remains were brought to Mudgee, and the funeral took place to the Catholic portion of the general cemetery this morning, the Rev. Father Maher performing the last sad rites. The sad cortege was preceded by members of the A.H.C. Guild, and among others in attendance were lifelong friends of the family. The arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Eastaugh and Carroll.
