Note: Scalded to Death

Scalded to Death Child's Fearful Injuries. A very sad fatality happened last Thursday when Clarice, the five-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Roth, of McDonald's Creek, was scalded to death. It appears that the little girl was in the kitchen where a saucepan of blue stone (being prepared for "wheat dipping") was boiling on the stove. By some means she caught the handle of the saucepan in the folds of a towel, and pulled the vessel off the stove. The scalding liquid fell right on top of her, inflicting terrible injuries to her neck and the right side of her body. Her screams quickly attracted attention, and she was quickly brought to Mudgee. Despite expert medical attention, the little one died in three hours. The deceased child was one of the prettiest little girls in the district, her flaxen curls, chubby face, and bright disposition made her a favorite with everyone. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved parents, who are very well-known and highly respected. The remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the Mudgee General Cemetery on Sunday. The cortege was the largest at any child's funeral ever seen in Mudgee. This in itself shows the universal sympathy felt for the sorrowing parents. Mudgee Guardian, Monday 26 April 1915, p. 2. Note: DEATH

DEATH MR. HENRY ROTH THE McDonald's Creek district lost one of its oldest and best pioneers when the death occurred on Tuesday night of Mr. Henry Roth at the age of 70 years. The late Mr. Roth, who had been in ill health for a considerable time, passed away at his residence. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam Roth, who were among the early settlers of the Mudgee district, he was born at Eurunderee, and had spent the greater part of his life there and at McDonald's Creek. By his industry, thrift and exemplary mode of life, he soon became one of the district's leading graziers, fruit-growers and vignerons. He extended his interests from McDonald's Creek and became the owner of several magnificent grazing properties. He was a staunch supporter of the Mudgee show society and was a regular exhibitor at the shows, his displays of grapes, than which there were few better in the State, winning many first prizes. The late Mr. Roth was a splendid citizen in every sense of the word, and the entire Mudgee district has suffered a severe loss by his passing. He was at all times willing to assist worthy causes, and there are many who have much to thank him for. To his widow, seven sons, one daughter, two brothers and one sister, who survive him, will be extended the deepest sympathy of a veritable army of friends. The children are Norman (McDonald's Creek), Emil (Putta Bucca), Roy (Mudgee), Elsie (McDonald's Creek), Wilbert (Broombee), Stan (McDonald's Creek), Mervyn (McDonald's Creek), and Lyle (McDonald's Creek). The brothers are Louis (Gullamarra) and William (Eurunderee), and the sister is Mrs. H. Macks (Concord). The funeral was held this morning from the residence, a service being conducted in St. John's Church of England. Mudgee, by Rev. L. C. S. Walker, who also officiated at the graveside. The interment was carried out in the Anglican portion of the Mudgee general cemetery, Messrs J. C. Swords and Son being in charge of the arrangements. Note: THE LAST POST

THE LAST POST Another Digger Answers the Call Another of the gallant band of 1914-18 Diggers, in the person of Henry Norman Roth, has answered the last call, his death occurring at Liverpool on Friday last. He was 48 years of age. Deceased was a son of Mrs. and the late Henry Roth, old and esteemed residents of Erudgere. He linked up with the first A.I.F. early, in the last war, and had a distinguished career of service at the front, being awarded the coveted Military Medal. He was gassed during the fighting, and suffered more or less from the effects till the time of his death. After his return from abroad he settled again at Erudgere, and later purchased a vineyard property at Eurunderee. His next venture was in the dairying industry at Gulgong, but he disposed of his business when he acquired Mr. George Newman's nice little property at Erudgere. The urge for change, which was the heritage of many Digger's, caused him to move on again, and he took up residence at Manly. His health began to deteriorate some months ago, and, despite the best of skilled medical attention, he never rallied, and passed away as stated. He is survived by a widow and four sons - Don, Henry, Vincent, and Neville. The first mentioned, following in his father's footsteps, enlisted in the present A.I.F., and was stationed at Darwin until he contracted illness, which made compulsory his retirement from the fighting forces. Henry is also a soldier, being in camp with the A.I.F. Truly a fighting family. A sorrowing mother and the following brothers and sister are also left to mourn; Emil, Roy and Stan, (Mudgee), Wilbert (Broombee), Mervyn and Lyle (Erudgere), and Miss Elsie Roth (Erudgere). To the sorrowing ones the heartfelt sympathy of the whole community is extended. The remains were brought to Mudgee; and the funeral took place to the Church of England cemetery on Sunday afternoon, the Rev; A. G. Powell officiating at the graveside. Messrs. J. C. Swords and Son conducted the arrangements. In attendance were many old friends of the family, and all united in paying reverence to the memory of a gallant soldier and trusted friend. Mudgee Guardian, Monday 12 October 1942, p. 3. Henry Roth Obituary

Note: DEATH

DEATH Mr. H. N. Roth, formerly of Gulgong and a member of the well known Roth family of McDonald's Creek, Mudgee district, died recently. He had a notable career as a soldier in the Great War, having been awarded the coveted Military Medal. Deceased was a relative of Mr. L. Roth, of Gullamara. Our sympathy is extended. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 29 October 1942, p. 16. Henry Roth Obituary

Note: DEATH

DEATH Mr. Emil Roth The death occurred in the Mudgee Hospital on Saturday evening of Mr. Emil William Edgar Roth, aged 44 years.
