Death of a brother | Thomas J Underwood 22 August 1922 (aged 70 years) DEATH OF PIONEER THOMAS UNDERWOOD PASSES An old identity of Mudgee, and one of its best liked men, Mr. Thomas Underwood, passed out on Tuesday, aged 76 years. Only about a week before his death he became ill, and was taken to the hospital suffering from pneumonia, which caused his death. Few people knew he was ill, and many had not heard of his death until the funeral procession passed through town yesterday. Mr. Underwood was a native of Burwood, Sydney, and had been a resident of this district for the past 50 years. He was a brother of James Underwood, the famous trans-Australian drover, and for years was engaged with his brother, droving cattle from the Gulf country, in Northern Queensland to the south of the continent. He was unmarried, and of a bright and lovable disposition. Wherever a kindly word or helping hand was wanted Tom Underwood had it to give. His demise will be deeply regretted by hosts of friends everywhere. Messrs. Tom Underwood (Mudgee) James (Home Rule), Claude (Sydney), Harry (Lue) Rolley and John (Budgee) are nephews. The deceased was interred in the Mudgee cemetery yesterday, The Rev. J. Parr (Church of England) read the burial service, and Mr. J. C. Swords had charge at the mortuary arrangements. Notwithstanding that many were not aware of the death, the funeral was a large one. It would have been much larger had the news been known. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 24 August 1922, p. 12.
