Event | Immigrated about 1857The Late Mr. Albert King. An Old Pioneer. The late Mr. Albert King, sen., of Narrango, whose death occurred on the 23rd September at his son's residence, Mr. Francis King, Fitzgerald-street, Rylstone, was a native of Yorkshire, England. He came out to this country the same year as the fatal ship, Dunbar, was wrecked. He had oft-times told the tale of that terrible night. He said it was the roughest time he had ever spent, their ship being almost wrecked several times. They saw some of the floating wreckage on the voyage. The late Mr. R. Kersley, of Rylstone, and the late Mr. J. Sharp, at one time caretaker of the Mudgee Cemetery, were both shipmates of deceased. Shortly after landing in Sydney he engaged with the late Mr. R. M. Fitzgerald's father, of Dabee as teamster. He drove a team of grey horses, they being the old gentleman's pride. "My word," he had been heard to say, "they were a team to be proud of. You can't get horses like them nowadays." Later on, the deceased settled down at Narrango, and started with a team of his own as carrier. He carted from Sydney to Rylstone, there being no railway at that time. Sydney was only a small village as compared with the present day. After the railway came to Wallerawang, he used to carry wool to "Wang” and bring other loading back to Rylstone. The deceased used to carry from the Cassilis district to Mudgee. Later on, having retired from the business, he carried on mixed farming, till he became a martyr to rheumatism. Then his sons carried on the work of the farm. The deceased gentleman was married twice - there being no children by the first marriage. He married the widow of the late Captain Grayston. He leaves a wife, nine sons, and one step son to mourn, being predeceased by five sons and two daughters. The names of the sons living are Messrs. H. King (Putta Bucca), F. King (Rylstone), Herbert, Arthur, David, Albert, Stanley, Harold and Athol (Narrango), while the step son is Mr. C. T. Grayston (Ginghi). Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 7 October 1915, p. 13.
