Note: Obituary

Obituary MRS SARAH CORNISH On July 6 at Coolah, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J. Casey, the death occurred of one of the most highly respected residents of the Cassilis district, Mrs. Sarah Cornish of “Binalong”. To know the deceased lady was a privilege; she was a woman who nobly fought life's battle, always hiding her own troubles and ever solicitous for the welfare of others. She had just made preparations for the building of a home in the town, where she proposed retiring to spend the evening of her life in peace and quietness, but the Great Architect saw fit to promote hereto a more lasting home, as her reward for a life nobly lived, and spent in the care of a large family. The late Mrs. Cornish was born at Merriwa 68 years ago, and was a daughter of the well known Curtis family of that locality. At the early age of 16, she married the late James Henry Cornish, of Cassilis, and took up her residence in that district. Her husband died in 1898 leaving her with a family of 13 children the eldest being 19 years of age, and the youngest a baby in arms. With wonderful courage she managed her property and reared her family, eventually with their assistance reaching that stage when she was in a position to contemplate living comfortably on the fruits of her labors. But although a healthy woman all her life, the strain had evidently proved too much for her strength, and her health gave way some 12 or 18 months ago. An operation seemed to give her a new lease of life, but of late her health gradually gave way and in spite of medical skill and nursing death claimed her. Out of 13 children reared to manhood and womanhood 11 remain to mourn the loss of a devoted mother: Harry, Cooba Bulga, Cassilis; Isaac, Coolah; Alf Binalong, Cassilis; Fred Coolah; Russell, Leadville; Walter, Merriwa; Richard, Arthur, Cassilis: Ernest Coolah; George Cassilis: Mrs. J. Casey, Coolah; Mrs. F. Stahl, Kandos. Two daughters predeceased her, Mrs. Casey, (Ada Elizabeth) and Mrs. W. H. Collins (Ethel, The deceased was spending a holiday with her daughter when she was overtaken by her last illness, and her remains were laid to rest in the churchyard of St. Columbas Anglican Church, Cassilis in the presence of a large gath-ing of friends and sympathisers, the Rev. Carlos Sketch officiating at the graveside. Mudgee Guardian, Friday 19 July 1929, p. 11. Sarah Cornish Obituary
