Death of a maternal grandfather | Malachi Donoghue 1 October 1901 (aged 18 years) MALACHI DONOGHUE. On Tuesday afternoon Mr. Malachi Donoghue, who resided between Wilbetree and Canadian, answered the summons of the Angel of Death. The deceased who was one of the first selectors in that district was widely esteemed, and is survived by a widow and grown up family. Mr. Donoghue was a ber of Mrs. Duggan, of Budgee. The bereaved relatives have our deepest sympathy. Our Gulgong reporter writes : - "Considerable regret was expressed in town on Tuesday when the news was brought that Mr. Malachi Donoghue, of Old Gulgong, had breathed his last. He took ill about four or five days ago, and not withstanding all attention he sucumbed on Tuesday. The funeral took place on Wednesday, and was largely attended by friends of the deceased, who was one of the most respected residents of this district. The family of the late Mr Donoghue have the sincere sympathy of everyone in their sad and irreparable loss (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Thursday 3 October 1901, page 14). |

Death of a maternal grandmother | Joanna Hart 1909 (aged 26 years) Age: 65 DEATH OF MRS. DONOGHUE. Another pioneer lady of this district has passed away in the person of Mrs. Johanna Donoghue, relict of the late Malachie Donoghue, whose death occurred about seven years ago. About a fortnight ago, deceased became an inmate of Nurse Guest's private hospital, in order to undergo a course of medical treatment for ophthalmic troubles. She was successfully treated and was expecting to leave the institution in a couple of days' time. On Tuesday afternoon, her daughter, Mrs. H. A. R. Cox, was leading her from one room to another, when she suddenly collapsed and expired peacefully in three or four seconds. The late Mrs. Donoghue was 65 years of age, was born at Hartley, but had been a resident of Wilbetree for nearly half a century. There her unobstrusive disposition, gentility of character, combined with her sympathy for the suffering, affection for her friends, and big fund of humor, made her esteemed and respected by all who knew her. It was in the relaxation of security, in the expansion of prosperity, in the hour of dilatation of the heart, and of its softening into festivity and pleasure that her real character wag discerned. She indulged her genius even beyond reasonable measure, in kindness to the afflicted, in generosity to the disaffected; she forebore insults, she forgave injuries and she overpaid benefits. Hers was certainly a peaceful and happy life, and her gentle spirit went out into eternity, even while a smile still lingered on her features, and her voice had barely closed to give utterance to some happy remark. The funeral took place yesterday, and was largely attended. Her remains were laid to rest in the Gulgong Cemetery, beside the grave of her late husband. Deceased is survived by six daughters and three sons. These are Mrs. Neubeck (Lidsdale), Mrs. P. Haynes (Leadville), Mrs. H. A. R. Cox (Mudgee), Mrs. J. B. Morony (Home Rule), Misses Bridget and Mary, and Messrs John, William, and Joseph Donoghue, Wilbetree. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 13 May 1909, p. 17. Joanna Donoghue Obituary |
