Death notice Elaine Patricia McPherson Obituary Vale Elaine McPherson (Photo, Fondly remembered: Elaine McPherson 1939 - 2008) The recent passing of Elaine McPherson has left a big hole in the local community. Especially for the members, supporters and staff of the Rylstone Club where Elaine worked for many years and later became secretary and then president. Elaine is survived by her husband Colin, children Tanya and Brett, and grandchildren. Elaine McPherson was born Elaine Patricia McManus on 25th October 1939, in Bathurst, the first child of Cliff and Jean McManus of Tarana. When she was almost two her family moved to Portland where her four bers and one sister were born. She attended school at St. Joseph's Convent School, Portland where she excelled in athletes. There was no television and at night her family played cards, monopoly, and bingo or did jigsaw puzzles. Her father taught all the children to knit and they used to make their own scarves. Because her mother didn't knit, Elaine's father used to knit all their jumpers and cardigans and most of the baby clothes they had. All of Elaine's family became members of the Portland Amateur Athletes Club and participated in club events every weekend. Through hard work and lots of training Elaine won the 1955 Country School Girls Championship for 100 Yards defeating Janice Brown from Kandos. Later in that year she defeated Betty Cuthbert to win the state 100 Yards championship. After a great deal of consideration it was decided that she give up running because of the hardships it was putting on her parents but she never regretted this. Towards the end of 1955 Elaine secured a position in the office of the Blaxland Shire Council, later transferring to the Hartley County Council. During this time she found a love for ballroom dancing. It was at one of these dances that she met and fell in love with Colin McPherson from Rylstone. They were married in 1965. They purchased a house in Rylstone and later their two children, Brett and Tanya, who attended Rylstone Primary School and Kandos High School, were born. During this time Elaine became president of the Parents and Citizens Association of Rylstone Public School and was made a life member in 1984. She was also president of the Kandos Swimming Club, president of the Rylstone Girl Guides and secretary of the Rylstone Boy Scouts for many years. In May 2006 Elaine was diagnosed with breast cancer which curtailed her life to a certain degree but she still found the time and energy to enjoy her grandchildren. During her battle with breast cancer Elaine said she wished to pay tribute to her friend and mentor, Pam Smith who has been a tower of strength during the 22 months of tri-weekly chemo treatments. Elaine also wished to pay tribute to her husband Colin who has been a tower of strength and has supported her all the way, doing all the housework, washing and cooking. Elaine is sadly missed by all her family. The Weekly, Wednesday 28 May 2008, p. 15. Obituary Elaine Patricia McPherson |
