Glen Alice Loses An Old Identity

Many people in the Rylstone and Glen Alice areas felt a great loss at the death of William Anthony “Bill” Baker at the Rylstone Hospital recently. At the time of his death he was 93 years old. Mr. Baker was a real part of the Glen Alice community, a pioneer who was respected by all. He had been a patient of the Rylstone Hospital for two and a half years but prior to that he had been enjoying an active life. At the age of 90 Mr. Baker was still riding horses and managing cattle on his small Glen Alice property. As far as anyone can recall Mr. Baker was born at “Umbiella,” a Glen Alice property. His parents George and Elizabeth Baker had six children but only one of their family survive. She is Mrs. A. Donaldson of Tamworth. At the age of 42, George Baker died of pneumonia and Elizabeth was forced to bring up her family alone. In those days teachers travelled from house to house giving the children lessons for one or two days a week in each family. The Baker family received this type of scanty education. After completing his lessons Bill began working for Walter Thorne who then owned “Umbiella” and later he worked for Walter’s son George on the same property. Bill became a great favourite of the Thorne children who as adults still remember him with affection. Bill’s sister-in-law Ruby Baker said that members of the Thorn family have told her that they will always remember Bill by his ever ready smile and willingness to joke with “the younger generation”. “He always welcomed the children who were keen to ride the plough with the team of horses to keep him company,” Mrs. Baker said. When he was 29 Bill married Annie Nicholson of “The Nile” Glen Alice and they had two sons George and Hector and a daughter Flora. They have all since married and now live in Sydney. Bill has one grandchild, Anthony Rayment, Flora’s son. Annie became very ill and spent several years in Mudgee District Hospital before she died in 1938. After her death and his children’s marriages Bill continued to live in Glen Alice where he made many friendships. His great popularity was evident on his 90th birthday when the whole Glen Alice District organised a party for him at the Glen Alice Hall. This was a day when his many friends and family members gathered to enjoy the day and talk over old times.
