Quarry Fatality THE LATE OSCAR McMANUS. VERDICT OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH. Mr. E. A. Prior, P.M., conducted an inquiry at the Mudgee Police Court on Tuesday morning concerning the death of Oscar McManus, who died on March 24 as a result of injuries received at the Mount Frome quarry of Wilson's, Ltd., on January 22. Inspector Godfrey appeared for the Mines Department, and Sergeant Tracey represented the police. Dr. Cameron, who examined deceased after the accident, stated that his injuries included a fractured spinal column, with complete paralysis of the lower part of the body. The cause of death was spontaneous rupture of the bladder, setting up acute generalised peritonitis. Clarence W. Gentle, employed at the quarry, stated that deceased was working a popping machine engaged in boring holes in a face of stone. He was standing right on top of the quarry when the fall of stone occurred, which witness believed was caused by the vibration set up by the machine. The foreman, Jack Villa, examined the ground after the shot which had been fired about an hour previously, The spot where deceased was working appeared to be safe ground. Witness assisted in extricating McManus after the fall of stone, and he was then conscious. John McManus, father of deceased, stated his son informed him that there was no neglect on the part of anyone, and that he thought the vibration of the machine had caused the fall. Anthony Villa, foreman of the quarry, said that after the shot had been fired he, in company with deceased, made an inspection of the area in the locality. Both tried it with a crowbar, and the ground appeared quite solid. Deceased was working about ten feet away from where the shot was fired when the fall occurred. In his opinion the vibration of the popping machine was responsible for the collapse. The Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 1 April 1926, p. 30.
