GULGONG NEWS.

(From Our Correspondent.) DEATH OF MR. J. A. CAMPBELL. "A good husband and a good father has gone to his reward " were the words expressed when the death of Mr. J. A. Campbell, of Slapdash, was announced on Sunday last. The late gentleman was born at Edinburgh, Scotland, 73 years ago, so at his death had attained a ripe old age. He came to the colony 63 years ago, and in 1876 took up land on Slapdash Creek, where he has resided ever since. Some eighteen months ago he took ill, and despite medical skill and most attentive nursing, gradually grew worse. On Saturday his family knew the last hours were near at hand, but he lingered on, conscious to the last, till Sunday at noon, when, surrounded by his four sons, seven daughters and wife, he passed away to the Great Beyond. The late Mr. Campbell took a keen interest in politics, and it was a pleasure to converse with him on the main topics of the day. His family is one of the most respectable in the district, and they have the sympathy of all who know them. The Rev. A. J. Doig performed the last sad rites at the grave. The funeral was one of the largest seen in Gulgong for many years. The deceased was a son of the late Dr. John A. Campbell, a one time well-known physician and surgeon in Sydney, being well known and respected in the fifties. All readers of the Guardian who know the late Mr. Campbell, of Slapdash, must be sorry to hear of his demise. Peace to his ashes.

DEATH AT GULGONG.

At an early hour on Thursday morning there died at Nurse Jones' private hospital, Mrs. Christina Martin, relict of the late Alexander Martin, of "Hillside," Goodiman. The deceased lady was a daughter of the late John Archibald Campbell, and had been ailing for some months previous to her demise. The late Mrs. Martin was a quiet, unassuming woman, a true and fond mother, and universally liked and respected. She will be sadly missed in the town where she used her influence for the well-being of her family and ministered to their welfare with loving kindness. Alexander (Dunedoo), Robert, Samuel, William, Edward, Thomas, and Albert, and Mrs. Cuthel (Beryl), Christina, Jessie, and Louisa, together with her mother, Mrs. J. A. Campbell, and a large number of grandchildren and numerous relatives are left to mourn. The funeral on Friday afternoon was largely attended. A short service was held in St. Andrew's Church before the cortege moved to the general cemetery, where the mortal remains were interred in the Presbyterian portion. The Rev. R. C. Sands officiated at the graveside, and performed the last sad rites.

Death of Mrs Campbell.

ONE OF THE OLDEST DISTRICT IDENTITIES. The death took place on June 22 of Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell, of Slapdash, and one of the oldest and most highly respected residents of the district. Born in Ireland, the deceased came to Australia at the age of 15 years, and at the time of her death had resided in the Mudgee and Gulgong districts for over 60 years. She had lived at Slapdash for 45 years, and was one of Gulgong's oldest identities. Mrs. Campbell reared a large family, nine of whom survive her, all of them being held in the highest esteem. They are: Thomas (Sydney), John Barbadoon (Gulgong), Eliza Jane (Slapdash). Mrs. Carr (Gulgong), Mrs. Lee (Gulgong), Mrs Fenton (Slapdash), Mrs. Lee (Tallawang), and Robert (Gulgong). The total number of her descendants, children and grandchildren, number 96. The deceased, who had a lovable nature, enjoyed more than ordinary good health until the month prior to her death, when she contracted a cold from which she never recovered, and which was practically the cause of her death. Mrs Campbell's husband predeceased her by twenty years. The remains were interred in the Presbyterian portion of the general cemetery, next to where her husband rests. The Rev. G. Nelson Bensley, assisted by Rev. G. S. Watts, read the burial service. The funeral cortege was a very large one. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Mr. S. J. L. Turner.

The Late Mrs Campbell

In the report of the late Mrs. Campbell's death we omitted to mention the name of one son, Benjamin, residing at Slapdash, which makes the late Mrs. Campbell's family, nine in number. The late Mrs. Campbell had travelled extensively. After her arrival from Ireland at the age of 15 years, she lived in Sydney until she was married. From Sydney she went to Victoria and then returned to Sydney: she later lived for seven years at Wattle Flat, during the gold mining rush. After leaving Wattle Flat, Mrs. Campbell resided at Mudgee, but for a few months only. She came to Gulgong when the gold rush first started, and lived here up to the time of her death, her home being at Slapdash. Mrs. Campbell's nine children are all living. She also leaves 52 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
