He was a… Mr John Milligan, born at County Down Ireland, died at Bathurst at the age of 87 recently. He was a fine stamp of a man, and was the life and soul of the Dungaree district. Many years ago he kept the Dungaree Hotel, store, etc., and dida tremendous business, no idea of the railway in those days being anticipated. When it was decided that the railway was to come to Rylstone, which it was thought would come on the main Sydney Road, Mr Milligan struck out by building a new hotel, store, butcher shop, etc., and when the navvies came along he did a splendid business. Some of the work along by Tong Bong meant some heavy cutting, and took months to complete. Up to this day many of the old hands call the place Dungaree, butafter the railway it was named Lue, after the late V J Dowling, who owned Lue Station. Mr Milligan was connected with the race club and other sporting institutions, and used to visit Mudgee on all occasions when there were race, sports, etc. Hewas a good hearted man, his hands were always in his pockets, and assisted everybody who wanted assistance. He remained in the hotel for many months after the railway passed through. Died at Bathurst OLD BATHURST RESIDENT. There died at his daughter's residence, South Bathurst, on Thurs-day, an old identity of the Mudgee district, Mr. John Milligan, at the age of 87 years. Mr. Milligan was a native of County Down, Ireland, and when he reached this country in the early days he followed fortune as a gold seeker on the mining field of Victoria. He transferred to New South Wales and tried his luck on the Turon diggings. At a later date he was bookkeeper on Rawden estate and subsequently became licensee of the Dungaree Inn at Dungaree. He remained there for a number of years and then started an orchard at Tong Bong. A number of years ago he went to Bathurst and has resided with his daughter ever since. He was well known to the older identities of the Mudgee district, and held in high esteem by them. They will bear memories of him with pleasure and feel sorry at his passing. He was interred in the Presbyterian portion of the Bathurst cemetery on Friday. He was thrice married. Mrs. J. Mumford (Bathurst South), Mrs. Twomey (Rylstone), John (Mudgee), and James (Binnaway) are daughters and sons (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Monday 22 September 1924, page 8). |
