Death of a maternal grandmother | Jane … 30 January 1909 (aged 41 years) Obituary (By our Special.) I regret to report the demise of Mrs. Dicks, of Breakfast Creek, which sad event occurred on Saturday last at that place. Up to within a fortnight of her death the old lady had enjoyed good health, but her great age and a severe attack of illness proved too much, and she succumbed at the ripe age of 83 years. The deceased lady reared a family of 12, five sons and seven daughters. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 4 February 1909, p. 6. Jane Dicks Obituary |
Biography | 1910 (aged 42 years) Biography Thomas Henry (Harry) Glew Early Settlers Harry Glew (Glue) was born at 'Ravenswood' Penrith on the 21st May 1868, second child of Thomas Glue and Caroline Ducks. In 1873 Thomas and Caroline and five children moved over the Blue Mountains to be one of the early settlers at 'Spring Creek', Cudgegong. Harry lived there until taking up land at Breakfast Creek, where he built a slab house in sections. The house still stands there today. On the 25th December 1895, Harry married Mary Ann Fenton at Mary's parents home at Camboon and they settled at Breakfast Creek. They had eleven children. Times were hard for Mary and Harry. Harry was away shearing such a lot. Mary used to grow vegetables and take them by horse and sulky to Rylstone, to sell. Harry was a grazier too, but mostly a shearer of renown and in the early days shearing with blades, he could top the best of them. As each sheep was shorn the shearer would put a chalk or raddle mark on the wall. These were later counted to establish his pay. Harry shore all over N.S.W., travelling mostly by push bike. Over a period of time Harry purchased more land. One lot was 'Springdale' (near Ginghi Bylong Valley). He purchased land from his father, Thomas Glue where some of his family ran cows to milk and sold cream to the Mudgee butter factory. Eventually the girls got jobs as housemaids and the two oldest girls started a boarding house in Rylstone in Louee Street. They had this for quite some time. The Glue boys moved around shearing like Harry their father. Harry and Mary travelled to town by horse and sulky until Harry bought his first car. This was a big day for Harry, who said 'Get in Mary, and I will take you for a drive'. The only thing Harry had learnt about the car was how to start it but not how to stop it, so he had to drive it round and round the paddock until it ran out of petrol. Mary died on 24th March, 1947 at the age of 73 years. Harry died on 5th June, 1952 aged 84 years. Both are buried in Rylstone Cemetery. Norma Edwards (Granddaughter) The Way It Was |
