DEATH OF MRS. HARDWICK.

Quite a gloom was cast over the community of Rylstone on Friday last, when the news was received that Mrs. Rebecca Hardwick, relict of the late John William Hardwick, had passed away on Thursday night, at her daughter's home at Haberfield, after a lingering illness which had afflicted her for two years. Mrs. Hardwick, who was 74 years of age at the time of her death, was a native of Hampshire, England. She came to Australia with her parents when a child, and has been a resident of Rylstone for over 50 years. The bereaved relatives include five sons and two widowed daughters, namely, - Messrs George Hardwick (Rylstone), E. F. Hardwick (Sydney), W. B. Hardwick (at present on a voyage to England), Harold Hardwick (Mudgee), Reginald Hardwick (Sydney), Mrs. White (Haberfield), and Mrs. James. The funeral services were conducted at the Rylstone cemetery yesterday afternoon by Rev. J. B. Penman, of Mudgee, in the presence of a large concourse, and a panegyric of the late Mrs. Hardwick was preached by the Rev. Penman in the Rylstone Methodist Church last evening. Note: Death at Rylstone.

Death at Rylstone. Mr. George Hardwick. Quite a shock was caused to the people of Rylstone and Mudgee when it became known that Mr. George White Hardwick had passed away. The deceased, who had suffered with heart trouble for about two years, recently went to his son's place (Mr. Arthur Hardwick, C.P.S. at Campbelltown) to recuperate. Little improvement came from the change and Mr. Hardwick decided to enter Dr. Murray Oram's private hospital at Darlinghurst (Dr. Murray Oram, we might mention, was an old college chum of Mr. Hardwick). The deceased was an inmate of the hospital for about two weeks, and he passed away on Tuesday afternoon. His age was 57 years. He leaves a widow and three sons - Arthur, C.P.S. Campbelltown; Aubrey, Justice Department, Sydney, and Jack, who is with a shipping office - and two daughters - Emily and Marion - to mourn. He was a ber of Messrs. Harold Hardwick (architect, Mudgee), Edward (Stanmore), William (Government architect Perth), and Reginald (P.O., Walcha). Mrs. Hardwick's maiden name was Miss Jane Harris, of Rylstone. The deceased, who was a native of Rylstone, he being a son of the late Mr. J. W. Hardwick, was very popular and held a high position in all affairs at Rylstone. He made many friends, and was looked upon with respect by all who knew him. For many years he conducted a butchery and auctioneering business at Rylstone, but of late he only conducted the latter business. As a businessman he was very successful, and the auctioneering name of G. W. Hardwick was well-known in the west. By his demise Rylstone has lost one of its foremost citizens. The deceased also was a keen sportsman. The funeral took place at Rylstone today. To the bereaved ones we extend our deepest sympathy (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Thursday 19 November 1914, page 26).

MUDGEE IN THE BOOM. DISTRICT CONTRACTORS ALSO BUSY MR. HAROLD HARDWICK'S STRENUOUS TIME. Mudgee continues to make highly satisfactory progress. During the past year or so many fine new buildings have been erected and comprehensive improvements effected to existing structures, and the good work still goes on. Mr. W. Carmichael is at present engaged in preparations for the erection of four lock-up shops at the corner of Church and Mortimer streets, for the Methodist Church authorities, and will later on, construct a new two-storey school hall at the rear of the church building. The Rev. S. R. Robbins has shown commendable enterprise in connection with the building campaign, for which he is in no small measure responsible. Mr. Harold Hardwick is the architect. The Mudgee Motor Garage being built in Church-street, to the order of Mr. F. Leslie, is rapidly nearing completion, while Mr. G. Wells is having a billiard saloon erected on the opposite side of the street. A compact residence and shop for Miss Rayner is in course of erection near the railway station, and the structure will add to the attractiveness of Church-street south. Mr. O. M. Bryant's handsome dwelling facing Lawson Park is receiving the finishing touches, while substantial additions to T. H. Marks and Co.'s already fine establishment have just been completed. Mr. Steve Malone is re-constructing Elton's pharmacy in Market-street. Improvements which will bring the Paragon Hotel right up-to-date are being carried out, Mr. A. H. Hall, of the Federal Hotel, has had plans and specifications prepared for adding another storey to the building. The appearance of Mr. H. S. Elton's pharmacy in Market-street, has been improved wonderfully by the installation of handsome new windows and doors, while the remodelling of Mr. T. K. Bennett’s shop in Church-street for the Money Savers reflects credit on all concerned. We are informed that Mr. Bennett, who is a man of many parts, carried out much of the interior work. Another Church-street improvement is the well-designed addition to Mr. I. R. Adams Criterion Theatre. Numerous other works of a less important character are in progress, which all goes to show that building progress in Mudgee is being maintained. Plans have been prepared for St. John's Church of England Trust, Mudgee, for a new parish school hall to be erected at the corner of Church and Short streets. The structure will consist of an entrance hall and portico 10 feet wide, with three large classrooms and school hall at rear 60 by 30 feet. The structure will be of concrete, with steel windows throughout. Mr. S. Bennett, contractor, Baradine, is progressing with the new Soldiers' Memorial Hall. This is a cement concrete structure, designed with a four column portico entrance from the Ionic order of architecture. Messrs. Stoddart and Sons have completed their contract for Messrs. T. H. Marks and Co. The accommodation comprises furniture machinery, produce, building and lime and cement departments. Mr. E. H.
