Death of a brother | Robert George Freestone 2 September 1913 (aged 54 years) DEATH. On September 2nd., at Portland, Robert George, sixth son of the late David Freestone, of Mudgee, died. The deceased was well known in the cement city (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Monday 8 September 1913, page 3). Note: The funeral of the late Mr. R. Freestone, son of the late David Freestone, of Mudgee, took place last week at the Portland cemetery. The funeral was one of the largest ever held there, and was a great testimony of the regard in which the deceased was held. The members of the M.U.I.O.O.F., of which deceased was a prominent member, had charge of the funeral arrangements, and a larger number of the brethren attended. In addition, members from all the other lodges having branches in the town took part, as well as a number of men from the cement works. In all about 250 men marched before the hearse, most of whom wore regalia. There were also representatives from the Cement Company, as well as a large following of the general public. The cortege was nearly half a mile in length. The service at the grave was conducted by Rev. Mr. Homfray. while the service for the M.U.I.O.O.F. was read by Bro. C. Kremer. The scene at the grave was very touching, most of those present being visibly affected at the conclusion of the ceremonies (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Thursday 11 September 1913, page 11). |
