Death of a brother | Herbert Jackson Nevell 25 April 1962 (aged 90 years) Mudgee Pioneer Dies in Queensland Following is a report of the death of a former well known district man in Mr. Herbert Jackson Nevell, as published in the Toowoomba Chronicle: Another link with the pioneers in New South Wales and Queensland was broken on April 25 when Mr. Herbert Jackson Nevell passed away in the Toowoomba Hospital, after a long illness. He was aged 85 years. Born in Mudgee in 1877, the late Mr. Nevell was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Nevell, of Butheroe Station, on the Castlereagh River. All the others of the family (including his twin sister) have predeceased him. Mr. Nevell’s great grandfather (James Vincent) and his grandfather (John Nevell) of “Carwell,” Rylstone, New South Wales were two of the first men who followed the explorers, Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson, in 1813 across the Blue Mountains. These pioneers crossed many miles of poor country and arrived at the fertile banks of the Macquarie River at Kelso and in that area they “squatted.” For many years it has been the pleasure of the descendants of these old pioneers to meet at Kelso on the anniversary of the dedication of Holy Trinity Church erected in 1825. It was the first permanent church west of the Blue Mountains. It was of great interest to the late Mr. Herbert Nevell that many of the original properties taken up by his forebears are still in the hands of their descendants. The late Mr. Nevell married Miss Irene Jarvis, whose parents (the late Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Jarvis) were pioneers of the Hay and Wagga districts of New South Wales. Mrs. Nevell’s ber, sister (Miss Jarvis) and sister-in-law motored from New South Wales to attend the funeral at which the Reverend R. Crook officiated. Among the floral tributes were those from the Jarvis and Nevell families of New South Wales. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 24 May 1962, p. 4. Obituary Herbert Jackson Nevell |
