Death of a husband | John King Lethbridge 10 February 1948 (aged 72 years) The Late Mr. J. K. Lethbridge DESCENDANT OF GOVERNOR KING Many residents of Nepean district regret the passing of that estimable gentleman, Mr. John King Lethbridge, of 22 Manning Road, Double Bay, formerly of the well-known "Tregeare" property, St. Marys. The long and honoured association of himself and family with the district is understood by numerous folk. As stated in last issue, Mr. Lethbridge died in Gloucester House on February 10. He was born at "Dunheved," St. Marys, on February 20, 1869, and was a great-grandson of Philip Gidley King, third Governor of New South Wales, who came to Sydney with Governor Phillip in the First Fleet. Deceased was a son of the late John King Lethbridge, who was born at Government House, Parramatta, on May 27, 1832, and died at "Tregeare," St. Marys, on May 14, 1900. His mother was Frances Emma Lethbridge, a daughter of the late William Tindale, who resided for many years at "Hornseywood," Penrith. Werrington House. His grandfather, the late Robert Copland Lethbridge arrived from England about 1827 and built "Werrington House" in 1832, where he lived for many years. Deceased was educated at the Public School, St. Marys, and afterward at Sydney Grammar School. Upon leaving school he entered the service of Alfred Lamb and Coy., where he remained for a few years. About the year 1891 Mr. Lethbridge resigned his position with Alfred Lamb and Coy. and returned to " Tregeare," where he carried on as a grazier until 1942. After the entry of Japan into the late war, his property at "Tregeare" was taken over and occupied by the R.A.A.F., which built thereon an emergency landing ground for 'planes. In 1942 Mr. Lethbridge was compelled to vacate his home and settled at 22 Manning Road, Double Bay, until his death. At the termination of the war he was unable to return to "Tregeare" owing to falling health. On April 28, 1898, Mr. Lethbridge married Violet Kate Tindale, a daughter of Anthony Nisbet Tindale, of "Torrie Lodge," Bylong, who survives him. He leaves two children - John King Lethbridge, of Roseville, and Winsome Mary Copland Shaw, wife of Denis Fitzgerald Shaw, of Double Bay. Mr. Phillip N. Lethbridge, of Rose Bay, and Mr. W. B. Lethbridge, of Werrington, are brothers of deceased and are the only survivors of a family of eight. Public Activities. Like his grandfather and father before him, deceased always took a very active part in public affairs. Amongst the various positions he held may be mentioned: Churchwarden of St. Mary Magdalene Church, St. Marys, for 40 years. He was Synod representative of St. Marys Parish, for many years, a member of the committee of Nepean District Hospital, and also a member of the committee of Nepean District A.H. and I. Society for many years. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on 11th inst. A service was conducted in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, St. Marys, by the Rector, Rev. E. H. Lambert, assisted by Rev. O. G. Dent, formerly Rector of St. Marys, now of Lawson. Mr. Dent made appreciative reference to the activities of deceased in the community and parish, his work as churchwarden, and his regular church attendance. The interment was in the adjoining church yard. Chief mourners were Mr. John K. Lethbridge, son, and Mr. P. N. Lethbridge, brother. Among other mourners were Mr. Denis F. Shaw, son-in-law, Mr. Darcy Robinson, nephew, Mr. Thomas Hart, nephew, and Mr. Frederick W. Lethbridge, cousin. Many beautiful wreaths were forwarded. |
