This aptly sums up the late Mr. Andy Kirkland, who passed away at his residence, 'Oakborough,' Rylstone, on Wednesday, August 26th, aged 84. Marrying a Miss Pickett, the following family were born to the union: Messrs. Alan, Richard, Cliff, Athol (killed in action), Fanny, Olly, May, Essie and Minnie, the majority of whom reside outside this district. A large gathering of friends and relatives of the family attended the funeral on Thursday, when the deceased was laid to rest in the Rylstone General Cemetery (Mudgee Guardian and North Western Representative Monday 31 August 1936, p. 4) |

Mr. Kirkland was born at Rylstone on May 1, 1912 and moved to near Cassilis when he was about five. He lived in or around Cassilis for most of his life. He served in the army as a sergeant for five years in World War Two, spending some time in New Guinea. Mr. Kirkland is survived by his loving wife Elsie, daughter Yvonne Haynes of Mudgee and son Barry, also son-in-law George and daughter-in-law Carolyn. He was grandfather to Leesa, Joanne, Glenda, Helen, Robyn and Karen. The funeral took place from St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Mudgee at 2 p.m. on Wednesday November 11 and proceeded to the Mudgee cemetery. Aged 75 years, Ernie as he was known to all, was a member of the old pioneer Kirkland family originally of the Rylstone area. They moved to the Cassilis area where Ernie lived in his earlier life. As a young boy, while staying with relatives, he attended the old (long gone) Cook's Gap School. Ernie was a sincere, quiet man, respected and well liked by all who knew him. He was a much loved husband, father and grandfather. As a young man Ernie worked on station properties in the Cassilis/Uarbry area. He was a member of the Cassilis Light Horse prior to World War II. With the outbreak of war, the Troop transferred to the regular army, and served in New Guinea, where Ernie rose to the rank of Sergeant. After the war he bought 'Innesville', in the Turill/Munmurra area where he and his wife lived until he semi-retired to 'Glen-Ayr', handy to Mudgee where their grand-daughters could receive a better education. Ernie's wife was the former Elsie Cosgrove of 'Woodlands', Turill. They had two children, Yvonne and Barry, and when Barry's first wife passed away 17 years ago they reared his twin daughters Joanne and Lessia. Ernie Kirkland is survived by his wife Elsie, daughter Mrs Yvonne Haynes of Turill, son Barry of Queensland and a number of grandchildren and other relatives. The funeral took place in the Mudgee Cemetery following a very widely attended service in St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Mudgee at 2pm on November 11.
