Inquest | 8 March 1977 (3 months after death) Inquest At Rylstone The inquest of Phillip Keech has been held in the Coroner's Court Rylstone by Mr. Phillip Mawhinney. The Coroner's findings were that Phillip Keech died of the effects of extensive cerebral necrosis and odema, sustained on November 18, 1976 at Louee Street, Rylstone, when the motor cycle he was riding left the roadway and collided with a guide post. The Coroner, Mr. P. Mawhinney continued:- 'On the evidence placed before me, I am satisfied as to the cause of death. The deceased was apparently proceeding North in Louee St., Rylstone on his motor cycle when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway at the Northern end of Louee Street,' Mr. Mawhinney said. 'The reason the deceased's vehicle behaved in the manner it did can only be speculation,' he said. 'I have some evidence before me that the deceased had consumed an amount of beer prior to the accident, but there is no evidence of the exact quantity. Speed is another aspect which I must consider in collisions involving motor vehicles. Unfortunately there was no witness who saw the motor cycle immediately prior to the collision to verify this, and once again one can only speculate. However there are indications that Mr. Keech could have been speeding. This is due mainly to the guide post which his vehicle hit initially and which ended up 25 metres away, and also the distance of the cycle from the initial point of impact. Mr. Michael Staff has told the Court that the deceased usually wore his helmet, but said he did not know whether it had been fastened. The helmet was located some 9 metres from the point where the deceased was on the roadway. This could indicate that the helmet was not fastened or it could have come loose. As I have stated, one can only speculate as to just why the motor cycle veered to the incorrect side of the roadway,' the Coroner concluded. Phillip Keech, 18, resided with his parents at 'Drayton', Rylstone before he met his death. Mudgee Guardian, Tuesday 8 March 1977, p. 3. Inquest Phillip Keech |
