DEATH OF MR . ALF. ROBBINS. Word came to Rylstone on Saturday night that Mr. Alf. Robbins, second son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Robbins, had died from the wounds he received. The sad news has caused much regret. The deceased soldier was a brave, fearless fellow, who, like many thousands of our brave lads, have given up their lives for their country. He had been through the Boer war, and when the present conflict broke out he was amongst the first to volunteer. He is the first district soldier that has been killed in the present war (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Thursday 24 June 1915, page 25).

Note: Obituary

Obituary Mr. S. Robbins The town and district were saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Sidney George Robbins in the early hours of Monday, March 29. 'Sid' as he was known, was a lifelong resident of Kandos. He was born at Rylstone in 1893 and settled here when the Cement Company first started operating. As only a young man he began business as a carrier with horses and drays; he also operated a horse drawn lorry. In the town are two hotels and the Church of England for which he carried the stone; he also carried the gravel to form the platform of the Kandos Railway Station. Sid enlisted at the outbreak of World War 1, being one of the first in the district to do so. He joined the first A.I.F. in the 49th Battalion Australian Field Artillery. After a short term in England he saw service in France at the Mons, Boulicourt and Agincourt. On returning to England he was awarded the Military Medal which was presented to him by late King George V., at Buckingham Palace. At the end of hostilities he returned to Australia and decided to settle in Kandos. He married Miss Madge Frost, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alf Frost, of Mudgee. They reared a family of four daughters and two sons. One son, John, died in infancy. Mrs. Robbins predeceased Sid by nine months. After the funeral service which was held in St. Laurence's Church of England, the cortege was led by members of the R.S.L. down the main street of Kandos, for Rylstone Cemetery. Members of the R.S.L. and Masonic Lodge also formed a guard of honour at the church. The civil service at the cemetery was read by Rev. S. Winton; the Masonic Lodge service by Wor. Master John Blain; the R.S.L. service by Jack Maher. The late Sid Robbins was a Foundation member and Trustee of Henbury Golf Club; President of Kandos R.S.L. Bowling Club; Past President of Kandos R.S.L. and Henbury Golf Club; President of Kandos A.L.P. and Kandos Anglers' Club and a former Councillor of Rylstone Shire Council. Besides his active interest in all social affairs, Sid was a keen golfer and bowler, and was well known throughout many parts of N.S.W. where he had competed in these sports for forty years. To his sorrowing family of four daughters, Gloria (Mrs. Holman, Cronulla), Lola (Mrs. Phillips, Kandos), Gwen (Mrs. Pennell, Kandos), Madge (Bebe) (Mrs. Verren, Sydney), James and Keith, of Kandos and sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, also his bers and sisters, sincere sympathy in the loss of a good father and friend is extended.
