Death of a paternal grandfather | Samuel Parkins 14 September 1931 (aged 33 years) DEATH MR PARKINS, SENR. It is with extreme regret, we announce the death of Mr Parkins, Senr., of Breakfast Creek, who passed away at his son-in-law's residence on Monday morning, after taking a paralytic stroke. Deceased had reached the ripe old age of 83 years, the majority of which had been spent in this district, where he was very well and popularly known. Mr Parkins, although he had long passed the allotted span of three score years and ten, preserved his faculties right up till the day of his death, and could read the paper without the aid of glasses. He had a wonderful memory, and could tell some startling tales of the early days. He leaves a grown-up family to mourn their loss, amongst them being Mr Sam Parkins, Mrs W. Monks, and Mrs W.Freeburn, the latter's home being where the deceased resided at the time of his demise. (Mudgee Guardian and North Western Representative Thursday 17 September 1931, p. 14) |

Parkins IN the passing of Samuel Henry Parkins, aged 59, whose death occurred at his residence, Bylong Road, on Wednesday, after a long illness, the district has lost a great citizen, and the Rylstone Shire Council an honest employee of 14 years service, for Sam, as he was popularly known to everyone, had faithfully attended to his length for that lengthy term, and expressions of sorrow were heard on every hand when the news of his passing spread. The very representative gathering ofmourners at St. James' Church where a short service was held prior to the cortège moving to the Rylstone General Cemetery, and also at the graveside, testified to the esteem and respect in which the member of the Parkins family are held by everyone. TheShire engineer, Mr Macintosh, and five of deceased's workmates acted as pall-bearers and it was what deceased would have wished, to be carried to his last resting place by those amongst whom he had labored so long. The Rev. E. H. Pitcher, Rectorconducted the services, and paid wonderful tribute to the deceased's memory at the graveside, when the Rector said. The scenes of his labors will ever remain as a monument to him, may we all, friends, strive to make the pathway of life as smoothfor others, as Sam Parkins did for the hundreds of thousands of travellers who passed along the roads he maintained. Many fine floral tributes were placed on the casket and the remains were laid to rest in the famiiy plot in the Church of England portion of the Rylstone General Cemetery. Mr. J. B. Simpkins having charge of the arrangements. Deceased lived for many years at Budgee. and married a Miss Monks, of Rylstone, the widow and two daughters, namely Maud (Mrs. Schneider), BylongRoad, Ruby (Mrs. Dawson), and one son.
