Death of a father | Ira Myers Nevell 11 December 1971 Turill Loses One Of Its Pioneers The death occurred last Saturday of one of the district's most well known and highly respected residents Mr. Ira Myers Nevell, 62, of Mudgee. The late Mr. Nevell was a member of the pioneer Nevell family of 'Durridgere', Turill, and has had bad health for a number of years. Recently he has sold his properties 'Durridgere' and 'Clarallar' in the Turill area. His son George has taken over Durridgere. He is the fourth generation Nevell to have the property. Mr. Nevell was a real country man and a lover of horses, and for many years, despite his bad health, he took a very keen and active part in Pony Club activities. Mr. Nevell first became associated with sporting events for children and ponies when his friends Mr and Mrs John Dulhunty of Merriwa held a sports day at 'The Rivers' for the local people to meet Mr Nevell's wife, Hilda, who came from Gulgong. From then on, Mr Nevell was connected with any sporting events for young people. He was associated with a number of Pony Clubs which were formed prior to the establishment of a state body in the fifties. Mr Nevell attended the inaugural meeting of the formation of Zone 6 of the New South Wales Pony club association which was held in Mudgee on March 1, 1957. Since then he has been a representative of the Mudgee Pony club on the Zone committee. Last year he helped in the formation of the Ulan Pony Club and became its President. The President of Zone 6, Mr Clive Suttor paid tribute to Mr Nevell this week. He said: 'Ira Nevell was the main back bone of the Pony club movement in the Mudgee district. He often helped new clubs and was very active as an instructor. He was the sort of a man who just didn't sit around and talk, he was always working and doing something. One could always depend on him. He did an enormous amount for other clubs.' Mr Nevell was also a member of the Mudgee Show society committee for many years. During that period with the show committee he was many times a ring steward for the ponies and horse events. Ever since his marriage in 1937, Mr. Nevell has had a grade Arab stud. Only recently he sold his stallion 'Aramic' to Wagga. Two of his children have taken after their father in his love and interest in horses. He is survived by his wife Hilda, son George, and two daughters Joy (Mrs. Jack Murkins) and Ann, five grandchildren and one ber Mr. Alva Nevell of Gulgong, to whom sympathy is extended. A memorial service was held in St. John's Church of England, Mudgee at 4 p.m. on Sunday, prior to cremation at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium on Monday.
