Note: Pioneer Sheepman dies at Mudgee

Pioneer Sheepman dies at Mudgee The death occurred in Mudgee District Hospital on Sunday of one of the pioneers of the Merino sheep industry in the district, Mr. Joseph Keech. Mr. Keech, late of “Owanilla”, Wilbertree Flat, was 89 years old. Born at Cullenbone in 1876, Mr. Keech was apprenticed to the late Mr. D. Cox, of the famous “Cullenbone” stud, where he rose to the position of manager and studmaster before establishing his own stud in 1905 using Cullenbone blood. He selected sheep for many other successful district breeders, while his own stock were successful at a number of Sydney Shows. He first exhibited at the Royal in 1912, and over the years gained 16 prizes (including Champion Ram) from 14 entries. He was a foundation member of the Mudgee A.P.H. and I. Association. Mr. Keech, who was well-known throughout the Central West as one of the area’s leading sheepmen, travelled extensively as a wool-classer until illness four years ago forced him to discontinue this work. He retired from “Owanilla” in 1950 to live in Douro Street, Mudgee. He is survived by children Thelma, Les, Kenneth and John from his first marriage to the late Rosann Callaghan, and by Norman Joseph, Doea and Mary Clare from his second marriage to Rosanna Lyons (also deceased). Requiem mass was offered at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mudgee, at 3 p.m. yesterday, prior to interment in the Mudgee cemetery. The funeral cortege was one of the largest seen in Mudgee for a long time. Funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Eastaugh and Carroll, funeral directors of Mudgee, Gulgong and Dunedoo.
