DEATH TRAP Truck Dashes Into Rylstone Dam Man Found Dead in Cabin On Monday last, about 6 p.m., Herbert George Weatherley (36), a grader driver of the Rylstone Shire Council, was driving a truck to his home at Hilltop, about two miles from Rylstone. Some 200 yards from home he had to traverse a dam embankment holding back a considerable quantity of water in a gully. By some means the truck left the embankment and dashed into the water. The driver was trapped in the cabin and was dead when recovered. When he did not return home his wife walked along the road from her home and reached the dam, where she noticed the overturned truck. Despite the cold she dashed into the water and tried desperately to rescue the imprisoned man. Finding this impossible, she sought help and the police were informed. The police and willing helpers were soon on the spot. Three young men entered the water and put ropes on the truck. With the help of those on the bank the vehicle was pulled to the side, the door was opened and the body recovered. Under the supervision of Dr. Howe, artificial respiration was carried out for an hour and a half, but without success. Later a post-mortem examination was held and certain organs were sent to Sydney. It may transpire deceased collapsed at the wheel and died before the truck capsized. Deceased leaves a sorrowing widow and three young boys (the eldest about 11 years to mourn. The remains were interred in the Church of England cemetery. Later a coroner's inquest will be held. Much admiration is expressed for the coolness and courage of Mrs. Weatherley who, in the dark and all alone, tried so gallantly to rescue her husband and assisted in the resuscitation efforts. Deceased met with a very serious accident about 2½ years ago, and of late had not enjoyed the best of health, although he seldom missed a day's work. He has several relatives in the Mudgee district (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Thursday 22 July 1943, page 12).
