Note: The Late Mrs. Nevell

The Late Mrs. Nevell Referring to the death of Mrs. Clarice Nevell, of "Claralar," Turill, the Rev. Powell, in the course of a funeral service, spoke of the privilege of attending in the Australian bush an almost unique ceremony where the Nevell clan have entrenched themselves for over a hundred years, and have always quietly and devoutly buried their people in the now historic family graveyard at Durridgeree, keeping this God's acre with loving care. "During the period of the occupation of the Durridgeree Valley," he added, "the Nevells have, amongst themselves established many sterling traditions and that good woman Clarice Nevell to whom we pay our last respects, kept them nobly. All who came to her home felt the warmth of her kind hospitality. She showered delicacies and good things upon them made by her own clever hand. She was always generous and kind to all. The esteem in which she was held was evidenced by those who gathered at the graveside. All the neighbors for many miles around were there irrespective of their different denominations. Perhaps the true test of how we have lived can be measured by those who mourn us." Among the floral tributes were: - Herb and Flo, Lou, Will, Bob, Wall and Doris and family; Stan, Mrs. and Bell Evans; Mr. and Mrs.W. R. Cross and family; Mr. and Mrs. J. Neely and family; S. Hardcastle and E. E. McDonald; Ira, Hilda, Alva and Milly; and from the stations Durridgeree, Glenlyn, Elphin and The Rivers. Mudgee Guardian, Monday 8 January 1940, p. 4. Obituary Clarice Nevell

Note: Turill Loses One Of Its Pioneers

Turill Loses One Of Its Pioneers The death occurred last Saturday of one of the district's most well known and highly respected residents Mr. Ira Myers Nevell, 62, of Mudgee. The late Mr. Nevell was a member of the pioneer Nevell family of 'Durridgere', Turill, and has had bad health for a number of years. Recently he has sold his properties 'Durridgere' and 'Clarallar' in the Turill area. His son George has taken over Durridgere. He is the fourth generation Nevell to have the property. Mr. Nevell was a real country man and a lover of horses, and for many years, despite his bad health, he took a very keen and active part in Pony Club activities. Mr. Nevell first became associated with sporting events for children and ponies when his friends Mr and Mrs John Dulhunty of Merriwa held a sports day at 'The Rivers' for the local people to meet Mr Nevell's wife, Hilda, who came from Gulgong. From then on, Mr Nevell was connected with any sporting events for young people. He was associated with a number of Pony Clubs which were formed prior to the establishment of a state body in the fifties. Mr Nevell attended the inaugural meeting of the formation of Zone 6 of the New South Wales Pony club association which was held in Mudgee on March 1, 1957. Since then he has been a representative of the Mudgee Pony club on the Zone committee. Last year he helped in the formation of the Ulan Pony Club and became its President. The President of Zone 6, Mr Clive Suttor paid tribute to Mr Nevell this week. He said: 'Ira Nevell was the main back bone of the Pony club movement in the Mudgee district. He often helped new clubs and was very active as an instructor. He was the sort of a man who just didn't sit around and talk, he was always working and doing something. One could always depend on him. He did an enormous amount for other clubs.' Mr Nevell was also a member of the Mudgee Show society committee for many years. During that period with the show committee he was many times a ring steward for the ponies and horse events. Ever since his marriage in 1937, Mr. Nevell has had a grade Arab stud. Only recently he sold his stallion 'Aramic' to Wagga. Two of his children have taken after their father in his love and interest in horses. He is survived by his wife Hilda, son George, and two daughters Joy (Mrs. Jack Murkins) and Ann, five grandchildren and one ber Mr. Alva Nevell of Gulgong, to whom sympathy is extended. A memorial service was held in St. John's Church of England, Mudgee at 4 p.m. on Sunday, prior to cremation at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium on Monday. The well known property “Claralla” in the Turill - Durridgere area was recently purchased by Mr. Douglas Baglin. It was previously owned by the late Mr. Ira Nevell of Mudgee, and had been owned by the Nevell family for two generations. It was selected by one of the district’s pioneers, the late Mr. Henry Nevell. The beautiful solid old home of hand-cut sandstone is a relic of the hard work of stonemasons and builders of the past era. Mr. Baglin who is interested in photography should be able to find good photographic material in this district.
