Death of a paternal grandmother | Elizabeth Lennox 3 April 1924 (aged 7 years) DEATH OF WOLLAR RESIDENT. The death took place at Wollar on April 3 of Mrs. Elizabeth Halpin, relict of the late James Halpin, at the age of 73. Mrs. Halpin had been ailing for a few months before her death. She was a very old resident of the district, having resided at Wollar for upwards of 50 years. She had a large circle of friends, and enjoyed the respect of all who knew her. She was laid to rest in the Catholic section of the Wollar cemetery, the Rev. Father Cooney, of Gulgong, reading the burial service. She leaves the following family: John, James, Peter (Wollar), Patrick (Mudgee), Michael (Merriwa), Mrs. Thomas Riley, Mrs. James Mara (Wollar), Mrs. Sydney Moss (Mudgee), Misses Mary and Josephine Halpin (Wollar) (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Monday 28 April 1924, page 15). |
Death of a maternal grandmother | Margaret Mara 21 January 1933 (aged 16 years) A REAL PIONEER Passing of Mrs. Margaret Egan By the death of Mrs. Margaret Egan, of Wollar, the district has lost a fine old character. The sad event occurred on Saturday last, and, although not unexpected, the end came as a great shock to relatives and friends. Born in the district 81 years ago, the late Mrs Egan resided at Wollar practically all her life. A woman with the true pioneering instinct, it was only natural that her interest in the pastoral and agricultural progress of the district should be keen. She was wonderfully energetic and capable, and was of great assistance to her husband in the management of the splendid property on which they lived. She acquired a remarkably sound knowledge of stock, and in other directions proved worthy of the title of pioneer. In her home life she was a model wife and mother, while to the sick and suffering her help was never denied. It can truly be said that her passing will be deeply regretted right throughout the district, and in many a home her memory will be kept green for years to come. She reared a family of two sons, and seven daughters, who, with a sorrowing husband, survive. Jas. (Sydney) and John (Wollar) are the sons, and both had the honor of serving with distinction in the world war. The daughters are as follow: - Mrs T. Finucane (Junee), Mrs J. Halpin (Wollar), Mrs J. Sheehan (Wollar), Mrs. M Halpin (Mudgee), Mrs Rowland (Sydney), Mrs C. Lynch (Botobolar), and another who resides at Newcastle. The funeral took place to the Catholic portion of the Wollar cemetery to-day (Monday) the Rev. Father Barrow (Gulgong) officiating at the graveside. To the bereaved ones the "Guardian" extends sincere sympathy (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Monday 23 January 1933, page 1). |
Death of a maternal grandfather | William Egan May 1935 (aged 18 years) LATE MR. W. EGAN A Fine Old Settler THE death of Mr. William Egan, at the age of 81, which was briefly reported in the last issue of the Guardian, robbed the Wollar district of one of its oldest and best residents. The late Mr. Egan, who was born and reared in the Hunter River district, came to Wollar about 50 years ago, and settled down as a farmer and grazier. One of the fine old type of bushmen, he soon endeared himself to all with whom he came into contact, and it was not long before he gained a reputation for hospitality as high as that of any one in the north-west. No person in necessitous circumstances ever visited his property in vain, and his generosity will be remembered by the many who have benefited by it. The late Mr. Egan is survived by two sons, James (Sydney), and John (Mudgee), both of whom served at the war and the following six daughters, Mesdames Finucane (Junee) Blanche (Newcastle, district), J. Halpin (Wollar), M. Halpin (Mudgee), Rowlands (Parramatta), and C. Lynch (Botobolar). The late Mrs. J. Sheehan, of Wollar, who died not long ago, was also a daughter. His wife died about three years ago. Bers are Charles (Merriwa), and John, Jack and Tom (Sydney) (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Monday 13 May 1935, page 3). |
Death of a mother | Margaret Christina Egan 3 March 1938 (aged 21 years) Age: 50 DEATHS MRS. J. HALPIN At the week-end Mrs. Halpin, of Gladstone-street, took suddenly ill, and the ambulance removed her to the Mudgee Hospital. It was not thought at the time that serious symptoms would develop, and the family hoped for a speedy recovery. It was not to be, however. Early in the week the patient's condition grew worse, and, despite the best of nursing and skilled medical attention, the end came at an early hour this morning. She had reached the age of 50 years. Deceased was a member of a well-known Wollar family, and had been residing in Mudgee for some time. She was a woman of wide sympathies and a kind and loving heart. To sorely afflicted souls her home was a haven of refuge, and she gave without stint to those in need, although the giving often meant a big sacrifice. Her home life was happy and industrious. The family claimed her, and as a wife and mother she set an example which will forever be remembered with pride by the circle now sorrowing deeply in the loss of their loved one. The passing of such a kindly, devoted soul will be deeply deplored, and the sympathy of all will go out to the bereaved family. Only the passage of time will soften the great sorrow of those who mourn today. She is survived by her husband (Mr. J. Halpin) and the following sons and daughters: Hilary, William, Noel, Monica, Kathleen, Evelyn, and Teresa. The funeral left St. Mary's Church, Mudgee, this afternoon for the Catholic portion of the Wollar cemetery, where the Rev. Father Foley performed the last sad rites at the graveside. Mr. H. Barton conducted the arrangements. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 3 March 1938, p. 2. Obituary Margaret Halpin |
