Note: A Sad Death at Mudgee

A Sad Death at Mudgee The sad news of the death of Miss Mary Kurtz, daughter of Mr. John Kurtz, has passed through the district in a wave of lamentation. Bright , cheerful, lovable girl, her untimely end has come as a great grief to the legion of friends Mr. and Mrs. Kurtz and their family possess. The circumstances of the case are of a character appalling. The deceased had only just got over the worst state of a severe prostration from influenza, was able to sit up, and take nourishments, and with care and best of medical consideration, it was hoped she would soon be well and about. But one day last week, Miss Kurtz was sitting in a room where the telephone is placed, when a man rushed in to use the telephone, saying he wanted to get a message to one of the Mudgee doctors, as a child had its leg broken. The suddenness of the man’s coming in, produced such an effect upon the lady, that in a moment almost she was overcome with a violent fit, and in this state she remained for days. Drs. Nickol, Challenge, and Lester were called in, and to the last they did all that medical skill and attention could suggest. But all in vain - and the end came after long hours of weary watching and doubt. The end came at 11a.m. on Sunday. The funeral on Monday is said to have been one of the largest and most representative that has been seen for many a long day. In this district, where the family are so well known and respected, you can hear sounds of sympathy on every hand, everybody joining in the wave of grief that the sudden and awful event has brought about. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 17 October 1907. Death Mary Kurtz.
