The deceased was only taken ill on Saturday, and was brought to town where a doctor was called in who ordered her immediate removal to a hospital, where she was taken, and where, as above stated, she passed away yesterday morning. The late Mrs. Hawkins was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Boyd, of Grattai. Death of a maternal grandfather | George Michaeljohn Boyd 7 May 1920 (aged 7 years) Another Death GEORGE MICHAELJOHN BOYD By the death of Mr. George Michaeljohn Boyd, which occurred at his residence Grattai, on Friday evening, the Mudgee district loses one of its best known and most respected residents. Mr. Boyd had been ailing for about twelve months. Born in London 71 years ago the deceased went to sea at the age of sixteen and landed in Australia some five years later, having been attracted by alluring stories of wonderful gold discoveries in the great new land of the Pacific. Becoming afflicted with the gold fever he followed in the wake of various gold rushes throughout the State, eventually arriving at Gulgong at the time of the discovery there. His quest of the hidden treasures having been attended with some degree of success he settled down here, and married at Gulgong some few years later. Leaving mining he decided to seek his fortunes on the land, and in order to equip himself with the necessary knowledge went into employment on the station in his locality. Later he went to Grattai and took up a selection. By the dint of untiring labor and ceaseless enterprise he acquired a competence, his property today being one of the most improved and best equipped farms in the district. Mr. Boyd was the father of a large family, some of whom are deceased. One son — his sole help— enlisted for service in the great War and saw four years of fighting. Deceased was one of the sturdy race of pioneers who have done so much to lay the foundations of Australia's prosperity on a sure and solid basis. He was of a genial disposition and a straight goer who won the respect and goodwill of those who knew him. He was a good sport and fond of outdoor recreation, tennis and cricket being particularly enjoyed by him, and even up to a comparatively recent date he participated in them, still displaying much of his old skill and alertness. He was a well informed man and could converse intelligently and interestingly on a great number of subjects. This was mainly due to extensive reading from a well selected library. Of recent years he took an interest in aerial matters, and expressed a keen desire to see an aeroplane, but this wish was never gratified. A widow, three daughters, and four sons survive. The members of the family are: — Mrs. W. Cover (Collingwood), Mrs. J. Boyling (Frome's Creek), Mrs. B. Gilham (Gulgong), and George (Walgett), James (Grattai), Will (Collingwood) and Thomas (Grattai). THE FUNERAL. The interment took place in the Mudgee cemetery on Sunday, following on a short service at the Church of England. The long funeral cortege was a testimony to the respect in which deceased was held. The mortuary arrangements were in the hands of Mr. J. C. Swords and Canon Dunstan conducted the burial services. Mudgee Guardian, Monday 10 May 1920, p. 2. Death George Michaeljohn Boyd |
