Note: Henbury Pays Tribute To Fine Golfer

Henbury Pays Tribute To Fine Golfer The grand old man of Henbury Golf Club, Mr. Lyle Gawthorne died suddenly at his home in Buchanan Street, Kandos last Sunday night. Members and Associates from the Henbury golf club attended his funeral at Mudgee on Wednesday. The Gawthorne name is one of the oldest in the Mudgee area. Lyle Gawthorne took up golf late in his life, but in a short time he showed that he had the patience and talent to tackle this very difficult and frustrating game. In recent years he reduced the handicap to 11 and one wonders how good a player Lyle might have been if he’d taken up the game early in life. He played in veteran events and as a member of the Kortum Shield team that won the Blue Mountains District Pennant three years in a row. Lyle enjoyed his golf to the fullest and on retiring from work spent most of his time on the golf links that he loved so much. Lyle Gawthorne has left his mark on the Henbury Golf Course with many hours of voluntary work saving the Club many dollars over the past couple of years. Members can see the vast improvement to all areas of the links due to Lyle’s efforts. Lyle Gawthorne will be missed throughout golfing circles, Members and Associates will have fond memories of Lyle as a friend, as a great mate and most of all, a perfect gentleman. “All at Henbury Golf Club extend their deepest sympathy to his widow Ruby and all the Gawthorne family,” a spokesman for the Club said. Mudgee Guardian, Friday 22 May 1987. Death, Lyle Gawthorne
