Note: Rylstone

Rylstone April 28. Since my last report, a shocking fatal accident has occurred to an old and highly respected resident of this district, Mr Abel Harris, of Kelgoolah. The unfortunate gentleman had been placing some men to work at ringbarking, on a certain portion of his estate, and at some distance from his residence, and was returning to his home last Monday evening, driving a four course dray. Although the deceased did not return at the time he was expected, still no particular alarm was felt by hisfamily, as it was thought he had been detained at the place to which he had gone. On Wednesday, however, one of the men alluded to repaired to the station for rations, and it was then discovered that something must have occurred. Search was atonce made, and about a mile and a half from Kelgoolah at the dray was found capsised, the body of the unfortunate gentleman quite dead, two of the horses also dead, and the other two in a very distressed state, owing, doubtless, to the effortswhich they had made to extricate themselves from the dray. An enquiry was held the following day, by W W Armstrong, Esq., C P S for the district, and a verdict recorded in accordance with the facts. The body of the deceased was interred onFriday last in our local cemetery, followed by a very numerous cortege of mourners, the late Mr Harris being both widely connected and highly esteemed throughout the district (Australian Town and Country Journal, Saturday 3 May 1879, p. 39).

Note: Fatal Accident.

Fatal Accident. Word came to hand yesterday of a fatal accident which occurred at Rylstone, the victim being Mr. Charles Davis, the well-known grazier, of ‘Tryallion,’ Bylong. From the rather meager particulars we are possessed of, it appears the unfortunate gentleman was on his way home from Rylstone and had just reached the outskirts of the town, when the saddle by some means slipped round on the horse he was riding, and he was thrown violently to the ground, the impact dislocating his neck. The deceased leaves a wife and family of seven — two sons and five daughters. He was a brother of Mr. John Davis, of ‘Ginghi,’ Bylong, and half-brother to Mr. T. Harris, ‘Holbrook,’ Widdin, Mrs. J. Lloyd, Coomber, Mrs. J. Bisley, Pinnacle Swamp, Mrs. G. W. Hardwick, Rylstone, Mrs. A. Dunn, Rylstone, and has a host of other relatives throughout the district, in which he was highly esteemed. His genial figure was known to many in Mudgee, and we join with them in conveying our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family. Mudgee Guardian, Monday 19 October 1903, p. 2. MR CHARLES DAVIS, OF TRYALLION, THROWN FROM HIS HORSE RYLSTONE, Saturday. Mr. Charles Davis, a well-known grazier and the owner of Tryallion Station, Rylstone, whilst leaving town this afternoon was thrown from his horse and killed. Mr. Davis had just returned from the Goulburn side, where, it is understood, he purchased a large lot of cattle. Sydney Morning Herald, Monday 19 October 1903, p. 7. Death Charles Davis

DEATH OF MR. CHARLES DAVIS. RYLSTONE, Monday. A magisterial inquiry was held on Saturday evening into the cause of the death of Mr. Charles Davis, of Tryallion, who was thrown from his horse on Saturday afternoon. A verdict of accidental death was returned. Sydney Morning Herald, Tuesday 20 October 1903, p. 5. Inquiry into death, Charles Davis

Note: RYLSTONE NEWS.

RYLSTONE NEWS. (From our Correspondent.) The remains of the late Mr. Charles Davis were interred at Bylong on Monday, amidst a large assemblage of friends and relatives, the cortege having left Rylstone early on that day. Rylstone was shocked last Saturday when the death of Mr. Charles Davis, of Bylong, was reported in town. The news could hardly be accepted as reliable at first, for only a short time before his death the deceased man had been in town, and had left in company with Mr. Cyril Caldwell, school teacher at Narrango, for his home at ByIong. It appears that upon coming to the river crossing on the road to Bylong, near the town, Mr. Davis' hat fell off into the river, and caused the animal to take fright and bolt, the rider becoming unseated and in the fall sustaining fatal injuries. It is a sad end, indeed, to one who has become so thoroughly identical with this district, and to the suffering relatives and friends I extend my heartfelt sympathy in the sad affliction that has come so suddenly and cruelly upon them. Mudgee Guardian,Thursday 22 October 1903, p. 14. Death Charles Davis

Note: COUNTRY NEWS.

COUNTRY NEWS. (From Our Own Correspondents.) RYLSTONE, October 26. It is with deep regret that I have to report the death of Mr. Charles Davis, senr., of Tryallian station, Bylong, which took place on Saturday, the 17th October. The deceased gentleman had only returned from Goulburn on the morning of the 17th, where he had purchased a large number of store cattle, and had started to ride home to Tryallian from Rylstone and when about half a mile from town his horse bolted, and dashed the unfortunate man against the fence, death being instantaneous. The funeral took place on Monday last at Bylong. The service was conducted by the Rev. H. H. Vale, of Rylstone. There was a very large attendance to show respect to the deceased gentleman. The principal mourners were deceased's wife, five daughters, and two sons, and Mr. John Davis, of Ginghi station, ber of deceased. Sydney Stock and Station Journal, Friday 30 October 1903, p. 2. WEDDING BELLS. The marriage of Mr. Walter Tweedie, of Portland, to Miss Amy Davis, of Tryallion, Rylstone, was celebrated in St. James Church, Sydney, on Wednesday of last week. Some days previous to the happy event Mr. Tweedie was entertained by his Portland friends and members of the Half Holiday Association. The President of the latter, Mr. Fillingham, referred to the kindness the citizens had received at the hands of Mr. Tweedie, and regretted that there were not more employers of his type and there would be fewer strikes and less necessity, for a strike fund or a wages board. A number of other townsmen endorsed the Chairman's remarks, and referred to the guest of the evening in eulogistic terms. During the evening Mr. Tweedie was presented with a pair of entree dishes suitably inscribed. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 27 January 1910, p. 17. Wedding Tweedie and Davis

Note: The Church Triumphant

The Church Triumphant MR. GEORGE HARRIS. When the late George Harris, of 'Woodlands,' Ilford (Rylstone Circuit) passed away on November 5th, the Methodist Church lost one of its noblest sons. He was born 79 years ago in the Rylstone district, and lived there all his life. During his long and useful life, the late Mr Harris showed an intense loyalty to the Methodist Church and its doctrines, and enjoyed a beautiful experience of heart religion. His name has been associated with the Church where he worshipped for over 50 years as the builder and during that time he sought to build for himself a house not made with hands, to which the voice of death called him. He leaves a widow and a noble family of sons and daughters, all of whom share their father's faith in God. Truly the life and death of George Harris are another triumph of faith and work (Methodist Saturday 4 December 1920, page 8).

Note: OBITUARY

OBITUARY MRS NINA DAVIS Death on Monday removed a very old resident of the district with the person of Mrs. Nina Davis who lived at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. P. W. Tindale, at West Mudgee. The deceased was 86 years of age at the time of her passing and came of the oldest pioneering family in the Rylstone district, her maiden name being Harris. She was born at Calcoola, Rylstone, and was the relict of the late Charles Davis, of Rylstone. For many years Mrs. Davis had been well and favorably known by a large circle of friends, and was a great worker for her church, the Church of England. She leaves two sons and five daughters to mourn her loss. These are: Mr. W. Davis, of Bylong; Mr. Herb. Davis, Bylong, Mrs. Gettens, of Bylong; Miss Evelyn Davis, Mudgee; Mrs. P. W. Tindale, Mrs. E. S. Nock, of Bogie, Rylstone; and Mrs. W. E. Tweedie, of Portland, the latter being very well known in Mudgee at one time. The deceased lady was buried at Bylong cemetery. Prior to the departure for the graveside, a service was held in the Bylong Church, when the Rev. Richard Mathers officiated. The service was very largely attended, bearing witness to the esteem in which the old lady was held by all, and the cortege when left the church was one of the largest that has been seen in Bylong. At the graveside the Rev. Mathers completed the burial service. Many beautiful wreaths were sent by sympathetic friends. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Mr. H. Barton, of Mudgee.
