Note: Death of Ex-gaoler Scully.

Death of Ex-gaoler Scully. Death has come as a happy release and ended the suffering of Mr. N. Scully, ex-gaoler at Mudgee. The deceased before entering the Prisons Department, twenty years or more ago, had seen active military service in a mounted regiment in India. He was a plain, unassuming man, kindly in his official capacity. The dreadful malady of cancer had attacked him, and for which an operation of removal of the tongue was performed in Sydney Hospital a few months back, after which, deceased retired from the service. The operation, it seems, did not check the malignant trouble, which reasserted itself, and, after long and painful suffering, the end came early morning. Deceased, who was 45 years of age, was a widower, and leaves a family of sons and daughters. He was highly thought of by the Comptroller-General and Deputy-Comptroller of Prisons, whilst his association with fellow officers was one continuous run of smoothness, and the old hands of Mudgee gaol staff, Messrs. Beamer and Christie Robinson lament deeply the loss of one who whilst officially their superior was privately their friend and brother. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 25 April 1901, p. 13. Sudden Death of Mr. Charles Scully. Mr. Nicholas Scully received a wire this afternoon that his brother, Mr. Charles Scully, had died suddenly this morning in Brisbane. Mr. Charles Scully was a native of Mudgee, and about 30 years of age. He was a tailor by business, having learnt his trade with Mr. Joseph Saunders, of Church Street. He had a genial disposition which enabled him to make a great many friends, to whom the news of his death will come as a painful shock. Great sympathy will be felt with his brothers and sisters. DEATHS MR. N. J. SCULLY The death of Mr. Nicholas John Scully, which occurred in Mudgee Hospital early yesterday afternoon, came as a distinct shock to his very many friends in Mudgee, where he had resided for a lifetime. Deceased, who had not been enjoying the best of health for some time, was admitted to the institution on Monday, but no one anticipated that the end was so near. 'Nick,' as he was familiarly known to all sections of the community, was born 65 years ago, and grew up amongst us. Quite early in life he entered the employ of E. Murphy, saddler, of Market Street, who, as is generally known, was joined by his son Frank in later years. In this establishment Nick Scully served faithfully and well, and upon the death of Mr. Frank Murphy he assumed control. He was a craftsman of rare skill, and assisted in staging the wonderful exhibits which were a feature at Mudgee Shows for so many years. In other directions Nick proved his worth. As a member of the local branch of the Ancient Order of Foresters he gave splendid service, carrying out the duties of hon. treasurer for a great many years. He was also selected on several occasions to represent the Order at district conferences in other parts of the State. Over a very lengthy period he was prominently associated with the various activities of his church, while in charitable and patriotic endeavor he labored long and faith fully. Of a kindly, generous nature, he delighted in lending a helping hand to those in distress, and no appeal found him cold-hearted. There are, in truth, many folk in Mudgee and district who will remember Nick Scully with affection. He gave, perhaps, a good deal more than his share, but he found consolation in the fact that he was helping the lame dog over the stile. He is survived by a sorrowing widow and the following sons and daughters, to whom the very deepest sympathy of the whole district will be extended: Charles (A.I.F., Newcastle), Frank (late A.I.F., Sydney), Peter and Neil (Mudgee), Mrs. C. Quinn (Botobolar), Mrs. Dickie (Meroo), and Mrs. Betty (A.W.A.S. Victoria). Two bers (Tom and Harry) and one sister Mrs. Schiller, Brisbane) also survive. The funeral took place to the Catholic portion of the local cemetery this afternoon, the Rev. Fr. Cass performing the last sad rites at the graveside. The arrangements were conducted by Messrs. J. C. Swords and Son. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 24 September 1942, p. 4. Obituary Nicholas John Scully

Burial 24 September 1942 (1 day after death)
