Note: Obituaries

Obituaries The death occurred suddenly in Mudgee last Saturday of Mrs. Esma McGowan, aged 60. Mrs. McGowan, who had lived in Lithgow for many years, had a heart attack while being driven on a visit to a sister-in-law’s home in the town. She is remembered in Lithgow where she lived in the railway cottages in Mort Street (then Vale Road) at a time when her late husband and well known cyclist Jack McGowan was employed on the railway. After his retirement for health reasons, the family returned to Mudgee and at the time of her death, Mrs. McGowan was living in Robertson Street, South Mudgee. The family left Lithgow in 1961 and Mr. McGowan died in Mudgee four and a half years ago. Mrs. McGowan, who was born and educated in Mudgee, was a member of the Ambrose family, well known in Lithgow, Mudgee and Bathurst. After her marriage in Mudgee and before going to Lithgow, she and her late husband lived in Portland. Surviving Mrs. McGowan are daughters Heather (Mrs. Fred Cunningham, of State Mine Gully), Edna (Mrs. Roy Black, of Miller Road, Bass Hill), Joan (Mrs. Bob Rowan, of Wattle Grove, Lithgow), Sandra (Mrs. Richard Baskerville, of Kandos), and one son, John, of Landa Street, Lithgow. Two bers are Mr. “Snow” Ambrose, of Bathurst, and Mr. Bert Ambrose, of Padstow. A sister is Mrs. Edna Harten, of Bathurst. Mudgee Guardian, Friday 19 June 1970, p. 2. Obituary Esma McGowan
