HITCHEN There passed away on Monday, at the residence of Nurse Hicks, Orange one of the pioneers, of the Castlereagh River district, in the person of Mr George Hitchen. He had been ailing, more or less, for the past two years, but latterly his malady became worse, and he went from his home, "Federal Park," Coonamble, to Orange about two months ago for the benefit of a change and expert medical attendance. However, he was a hopeless case, and the end came on Monday afternoon. During his illness in Orange his wife never left his side, and lived in the hope that he would improve ufficiently to enable him to be removed to the seaside, where it was opined the sea air would have had a beneficial effect upon his system. The deceased was one of the best known of the Coonamble sheepmen, and enjoyed a wide popularity throughout the west where he spent the whole of his existence. His age was 6l, and he was a ber of Captain Bill Hitchen, also of Mrs Munro, proprietress of the Park Hotel in Bathurst. His other sisters are Mrs Irving (Abbotsford), the late Mrs Bibb, and the late Mrs Maberley. Messrs J. H. and R. G. Hitchen, of Gilgandra, are also bers. The remains were laid to rest in the Church of England portion of the Orange cemetery, the funeral service being conducted by the Rev. Canon Taylor. A grownup family is left to mourn the loss of a loving father, whose memory will be kept green by his beneficent actions during the course of his life. The funeral was attended by friends and relatives of the family from Gilgandra. Coonabarabran and Bathurst (Gilgandra Weekly, Friday 3 March 1916, page 9). |
