A SAD DEATH.

The death occurred on Monday night at Dr. Hansard's private hospital Rylstone, of a little lad, named George Henry Cassidy, aged 13, a son of Mr. J. W. Cassidy, teacher of the Ilford Public School. The little fellow was a particularly clever scholar, and has been for some months the holder of a district school bursary, which he had won by steady application and keen intelligence, and a life of fair promise lay before him; but of it, the decree went forth he should not partake, and he entered his kingdom while his laurels were yet green. He became ill about a fortnight ago, and serious symptoms manifesting themselves, he was ordered to Rylstone, where he breathed his last as above stated. The funeral took place at Rylstone on Tuesday.

Sir Jack, or “Cass” as he was known by his fellow lawyers, would have been 82 on June 12. Sir Jack is survived by his wife, his only son Derek, and his mother who will be 99 this year, also sisters, Alice (Mrs. Jones), Margaret (Mrs. Dunlop) and brother Eric, retired bank manager of Muswellbrook. The funeral service was held at St. Stephens Church, Macquarie Street, Sydney followed by cremation. Sir Jack was first cousin of Mrs.Thelma Noonan (Pyramul), Mr. Jack Wardrop, Mrs. May Chapman and Mrs. Lillian Chapman. Mrs. Cassidy (senior) was a sister of the late Mrs. Alice Wardrop of “Avondale”, Pyramul. Sir Jack planned originally to become a University Mathematics Lecturer, but while doing his arts course, he took up law. In 1922 he was accepted by the Bar and became a Kings Counsel in 1938, retiring last Christmas. Sir Jack acted as an observer at the Nuremburg war criminal trials and was Vice-President of the New South Wales Liberal Party from 1946 to 1955. In 1969, he set a record for court addresses by speaking for 73 days in his summary on the three-and-a-half year American Flange-Rheem case in Sydney. His client, Rheem, won the case. Sir Jack, once an avid tennis player, turned down an offer to become a Judge, saying: “I have always liked to be in a fight, not looking at it”.
