SELINA BIRCHALL The death took place at the Wellington District Hospital yesterday afternoon, after a short illness, of Mrs. Selina Birchall. The late Mrs. Birchall was the wife of Mr. James Birchall, and had resided in Wellington for about 40 years, living in Gisborne Street for 20 years. A little time ago, with her husband, they went to reside with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Masters, of Spicer's Creek. She is survived by her husband and two grown up children, Harry Kirkland Birchall, of the A.I.F., who is at present an inmate of Yaralla Hospital, and Mrs. Ken Masters, of Spicer's Creek. The remains were encased in a polished maple casket, and after a service at St. John's Church of England this afternoon, were laid to rest in the Church of England portion of the Wellington cemetery, the Ven. Death of a brother | William Benit George 15 March 1942 (aged 55 years) TUNNEL TRAGEDY MAN DISAPPEARS FROM TRAIN WELL-KNOWN KANDOS RESIDENT The body of William George, 62, a retired miner, of Kandos, was discovered on the down line between No. 3 and 4 tunnels yesterday morning at about 9.30. Deceased, who was a passenger on the Mudgee mail, travelling west, which passed that section at about 3.15 a.m., is believed to have accidentally fallen from the train, although the actual circumstances have yet to be clarified. Charles Ferguson, who was travelling in the same compartment as deceased, reported at Wallerawang that the deceased's hat and shoes were still near his seat, although he had not noticed him after the train passed through Lawson. Ferguson went to sleep at Lawson, and on awakening at Lithgow coal-stage found that deceased was not in his seat. He again dropped off to sleep and on arrival at Wallerawang when the deceased had still not returned, he reported the matter to the train authorities. Later that morning the driver of a goods train from Lithgow reported on arrival at Newnes Junction that he had noticed the body lying on the down line. Lithgow control officer was then informed and contacted the police and ambulance officers, who immediately proceeded to the scene. The body was conveyed to the Lithgow hospital morgue. Plainclothes Const. E. E. Mabbutt. of Lithgow, is investigating. He has contacted Mr. Ferguson, from whom a statement has been obtained. Until this is received at Lithgow the police offer no theory as to how George came to his death. Deceased was a married man with a grown-up family. He was the eldest of a well-known Kandos district family. Mr. Rupe George, of Main-street is a brother. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon. Interment will be made in the Rylstone cemetery. Messrs. Matthews and Lemon have charge of the arrangements. |
Burial of a brother | William Benit George 17 March 1942 (aged 55 years) RYLSTONE-KANDOS FUNERAL OF THE LATE BILL GEORGE The funeral of the late William Benit George, who met his death under tragic circumstances on Sunday last, took place from the Church of England, Kandos, on Tuesday to the Rylstone Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, and the hearse was preceded by members of the Kandos Miners' Lodge, who marched to the over-head bridge. The service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. Father Cohen. The sudden passing of Bill George has removed an old and respected resident of this district. The deceased had spent practically all his life here. It is only three weeks ago, since Bill retired from the Kandos Colliery on pension, and it was his intention to spend the rest of his life at the Nullo Mountain, growing vegetables and looking after his bees; but Fate ruled that this was not to be. The deceased was a fine sportsman, and was well known in trotting circles as the owner of some good performers. As a work mate it would be hard to find a better, and he was held. In the highest of esteem by his miner colleagues. The deceased is survived by his widow and grown-up family, and five brothers and two sisters, to whom we extend our deepest sympathy. |
