Obituary

At Wednesday's meeting of the Cudgegong Shire Council President Barton referred to the lamentable passing of Sir Frederick McMaster and Mr. Les. Mulley, and it was resolved to forward letters of condolence to the bereaved families. By the death of Mr. Joseph Leslie Mulley, which occurred at his home in Perry Street early on Tuesday morning, Mudgee lost one of its best known citizens. Of late months he had been under specialist treatment for a heart affection, and only recently returned home from hospital in Sydney. Born in Mudgee 59 years ago, deceased entered the butchering business when quite young, and, by industry and strict attention to details, made a marked success of his venture, in which he was assisted by other members of the family. Always attracted by good horses, he played a prominent part in the racing game, and owned some good performers over the course of years. Before business cares became too urgent he entered with zest into the game of football, and, with two brothers, formed a formidable forward combination. He continued to take a great interest in the sport after retiring from active participation, and was always a generous patron. In conjunction with his business, he entered largely into stock transactions, and also acquired grazing interests in various parts of the] district. Altogether, the late Mr. Les. Mulley loved a full and active life, and made friends among a very large section of the community. His generosity when called upon to assist deserving causes was worthy of the deepest admiration, and many organisations and individuals in town and district will greatly miss him. He is survived by a widow, two sons and one daughter, viz: Bruce and Jack (Mudgee), and Mrs. Batten (Lue). To the sorrowing ones the deepest sympathy of the whole community is extended. The funeral, which was very largely attended, took place on Wednesday, Rev. R. R. Smith, Methodist minister, officiating. As an indication of the affection in which deceased was held, a special car was necessary to carry the floral tributes. The arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Eastaugh and Carroll.
