Death of a brother | Robert Wallace Wright 1 September 1915 (aged 26 years) Dashed Into a Sulky A Young Man Killed. A fatal accident, resulting in the death of a young man, named Robert Wallace ("Bob") Wright, 20 years of age, occurred yesterday. It appears that his sister, Mrs. A. Bailey, was driving to her home, which is close beside the home of her parents. She was in a sulky, driving with one hand, nursing a baby and leading a horse at the back. A little daughter, who was also in the vehicle, was also leading a horse. About 7.30 p.m., Mrs. Bailey had reached a spot on the Buckaroo-road close to her house. Meanwhile, unbeknown to her, her brother was walking along the road, wheeling a bicycle and conversing with two companions, viz., Robert Potts and Atley Barton. They heard the vehicle coming, and when it was about a hundred yards away the deceased mounted his bicycle, replying to a warning about the vehicle that he knew it was there. However, a collision occurred, and the shaft of the sulky struck the young fellow in the chest. He was thrown violently to the ground. The sulky was pulled up, and deceased's two friends rushed up. It was at once seen that a serious accident had happened, for the cyclist was moaning and evidently in dreadful pain. He was conveyed to his parents' residence, and the doctor was communicated with. Despite expert medical attention, however, the injured man gradually sank and died about 5 a.m. this morning. Deceased only attained his 20th birthday yesterday. He was a fine stamp of Australian, and a popular, hard-working, clean-living young fellow. His untimely end came as a great shock to the community. A brother of deceased (Sergeant T. R. Wright) is at the front in Gallipoli. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved mother (Mrs. J. R. Wright) and relatives. The funeral will take place tomorrow at 2.30 p.m. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 2 September 1915, p. 20. Robert Wright Death |
