Mudgee.

The past few days has seen the exit from this life of three very old identities of Mudgee in the persons of Mrs. John Mills, of Millsville, Mullamuddy; Mrs. Croft, of Lewis-street, Mudgee; and Mrs. F. Britten, of Marrickville. late of Mudgee. Mrs. Mills, who had attained the ripe old age of 84 years, had her end hastened in an awful fashion. Enfeebled, as one of her age must have been, she last Wednesday fell into the fire, and sustained burns which occasioned shock, and resulted in her demise. The names of the deceased lady and her late husband (Johnny Mills) were household among the pioneers of Mudgee, and many remember her 40 years ago having kept the Imperial Hotel. Deceased was the mother of Mrs. V. Cox, teacher of the Millsville Public School. Her funeral to the Mudgee cemetery, last Saturday afternoon, was largely attended.

Death of Mr. Vivian Cox.

Just as we go to press the bell of St. John's Church is tolling, to mark the death of Mr. Vivian Cox, one of the old identities of Mudgee. The deceased, who was 70 years of age, went to bed last evening in his usual health, but passed away during the night, death coming so quietly as not even to disturb one of his sons who was sleeping in the same room. Deceased was a son of the late Henry Cox, and was a brother of Mrs. G. H. Cox, of Burrundulla, and Mr. F. Cox, of Menah. Many years ago Mr. Vivian Cox was a member of the firm of Messrs. Crossing and Cox, and he is survived by a widow and family, who have our deepest sympathy.

DEATH OF OLD RESIDENTS.

MRS. VIVIAN COX. Last night at 8.30 there passed away at Braeburn Hospital, Mudgee, Mrs. Vivian Cox, of "Bellanbar," Gulgamree (near Cudgegong). The deceased lady was 64 years of age, and had lived in this district all her life. The immediate cause of death was an internal complaint. The deceased was born in Rylstone, being the daughter of the late Mr. John Mills, who was a resident of Mudgee at one time, being proprietor of the Imperial Hotel some 40 years ago. She was well-known and highly respected in this district. At one time she was in the Education Department, and for 25 years taught the school at Millsville. From this post she retired about three years ago. Her husband, who predeceaseed her by 10 years, was the founder of the firm of Crossing and Cox, auctioneers, of Mudgee, he joining with Mr. Henry Crossing in establishing the firm nearly half a century ago. The deceased lady is survived by four sons and 6 daughters, viz., Vivian Henry (John Bridge and Co., Ltd.), Sydney, John (Lawson's Creek), William King ("Bellanbar," Gulgamree), Albert Victor (Mudgee district representative of John Bridge and Co.), Mrs. Alfred Reid (Melbourne), Mrs. Henry Rayner (Mount Jack, Cudgegong), Mrs. Arthur Rayner (Gulgamree), Miss Mary E. Cox (Mudgee), Miss Una Cox (Manly), and Miss V. Cox (Mudgee). The late Mrs. Cox had been ailing for some time, so that her death was not altogether unexpected. However, the family are deeply grieved at their sad loss, and we join with many friends in extending to them our sympathy. The remains of the deceased were interred in the C. E. portion of the Mudgee cemetery this afternoon, the Rev. E. P. Lowe officiating at the graveside.

MEMBER OF PIONEER FAMILY

THE late Sidney John Cox, to whose death reference was made in a recent issue of the "Guardian," came of a noted pioneering family. His father, the late Vivian Cox, was connected with the old-established firm of Crossing and Cox, in the early days of Mudgee, while his grandfather was among the very earliest of our settlers - one of the gallant band who blazed the track for future generations. Deceased, who followed grazing pursuits for many years, was a keen lover of a good horse, and the "sport of kings" had great attraction for him in the days when the district was noted for its fine thoroughbreds. He is survived by a widow, son (Vivian, Meroo Downs), and daughter (Marjorie).
