DEATH

Mr. Athol R. Rayner

DEEP regret was expressed on all sides when it became known that Mr. Athol R. Rayner, of Mudgee had passed away. Deceased, who was 44 years of age, took suddenly ill about a fortnight ago, and was admitted to hospital for treatment. He made no progress, and a specialist was summoned from Sydney. Despite everything that could be done, however, he became worse, and the end came at about noon yesterday. Athol was the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Rayner, pioneers of the district. He conducted a garage business in town and was held in the highest esteem by all with whom he came in contact. Like most members of the Rayner family, he was a keen cricket enthusiast, and played with marked success for the Methodist Club, his left-hand bowling being particularly effective. He will be sadly missed by his comrades and the public generally and the deepest sympathy will go out to the bereaved parents and other relatives. The funeral took place from the Methodist Church this afternoon after an impressive service by the Rev. R. Gibson, who also officiated at the graveside. Messrs J. C. Swords and Son had charge of the arrangements.

DEATH

Mr. C. Rayner

The death occurred at his home on Friday last, of Mr. Charles Rayner, aged 81 years. Deceased was a member of a pioneer Mullamuddy family, and spent the whole of his long and useful life in the Mudgee district, where he was very widely known and universally respected. Up till his retirement he was engaged in farming and grazing pursuits at Frome's Creek. Like other members of this honorable family, he was a particularly keen sportsman, and among old-time cricketers he was a familiar figure. There were few fields in the district on which he had not played, and he was active in the game till well past middle age. He had a remarkable knowledge of the performances of the great cricketers who made history on the field both at home and abroad, and right up till the time of his last illness he followed every important match with great interest. Being such a genuine sportsman, it followed that he was also a fine citizen, and in every circle that he moved he was held in the highest regard. There are very many who will sadly miss Charlie Rayner. He is survived by a widow and two sons, Irving and Lester, and to the bereaved ones sincere sympathy will be extended. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon after an impressive service in the Methodist Church, the Rev. A. C. Towner officiating. The arrangements were conducted by Messrs. J. C. Swords and Son.
