OBITUARY.

MRS ELLEN BATTEN. Mrs. Ellen Batten, widow of the late William Batten, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. C. Casimir, at Lewisham on August 13. On Friday last the venerable lady fell and fractured her thigh, and at her advanced age, 87, the shock proved too great. Deceased, who was born at Penrith, came to Mudgee over 60 years ago, and resided in the one house in Horatio-street, for more than half a century. A few years ago she went to reside with her daughter at Lewisham. She was a fine old character, and made a large number of warm friends during her long residence in Mudgee. Deceased was a sister of the late A. G. Taylor, probably one of the most brilliant men who ever represented Mudgee in the Legislative Assembly of the State. She retained her faculties in a remarkable fashion, and was able to read without glasses right up till the last. All her children and grandchildren were with her at the end. She is survived by the following sons and daughters: Mrs. C. Casimir, Lewisham; Mrs. C. Phillips, Lithgow; Mr. E. Batten, Brisbane; and Mr. Joseph Batten, Belmore. Thirteen grandchildren, including Mr Harry Connolly, who is well known in Mudgee, are also left to mourn. The remains were cremated and the Rev. Cameron Woods conducted the service at the Rookwood crematorium.
